Demerara
Demerara was a Dutch colony in South America from 1752 to 1814 . It was part of Essequibo , also called Essequibo and Demerara. The term Dutch Guiana was also used as a collective term for the Dutch colonies on the north coast of South America .
Demerara is now a region in Guyana and is still included in the name of the administrative units Demerara-Mahaica , Essequibo Islands-West Demerara and Upper Demerara-Berbice . The region is named after the Demerara River , which flows into the Atlantic at Georgetown .
Demerara was the birthplace of Sir James Douglas (1803-1877), the British governor of Vancouver Island and the province of British Columbia . John Cunningham (1885–1962), British Admiral and First Sea Lord, also came from here .
Demerara is also the name for Demerara sugar , a specific type of cane sugar .
