Essequibo Islands-West Demerara is a region in northern Guyana . The region is divided by the Essequibo . It borders the Atlantic Ocean in the north, the Demerara-Mahaica region in the east, the Upper Demerara-Berbice region in the south and the Cuyuni-Mazaruni and Pomeroon-Supenaam regions in the west. The western part of the region is claimed by Venezuela as Guiana Esequiba .

In the region there are the towns of Parika , Schoon Ord and Uitvlugt , the administrative center is Vreed en Hoop . At the mouth of the Essequibo are large islands such as Hog Island , Wakenaam and Iguana .
