The Rio Group (Spanish: Grupo de Río , Portuguese: Grupo do Rio ) is a consultation mechanism of Latin American democracies founded at a conference of foreign ministers on December 18, 1986 in Rio de Janeiro , in which 24 states and CARICOM are now involved.

The Rio Group is of the Contadora Group ( Colombia , Mexico , Panama and Venezuela ) and the Contadora Support Group ( Argentina , Brazil , Peru and Uruguay emerged), which is peace in Central America sought. In addition to the founding members, Belize , Bolivia , Chile , Costa Rica , the Dominican Republic , Ecuador , El Salvador , Guatemala , Guyana , Haiti , Honduras , Jamaica , Cuba , Nicaragua , Paraguay and Suriname also belong to the Rio group.

Since 1987 there have also been regular meetings between representatives of the Rio Group and the European Union at ministerial level; the consultation was institutionalized with the 1990 Rome Agreement.

At the 21st meeting of the Rio Group in Cancún , Mexico , the formation of a new confederation (without the participation of the USA and Canada ) called Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC) was agreed. The new community of states was founded in December 2011 in Caracas , Venezuela and is intended as a counterweight to the Organization of American States (OAS), which has been dominated by the USA up to now .
