Caribbean Airlines is the national airline of Trinidad and Tobagos , based in Port of Spain and based at Piarco Airport .
history
Caribbean Airlines was founded on September 27, 2006 and began flight operations on January 1, 2007. It is considered the successor to BWIA West Indies Airways , which ceased operations at the end of 2006. Caribbean Airlines took over the fleet, consisting of six Boeing 737-800s and two Airbus A340-300s , the employees and the routes of BWIA. The two A340-300s were retired shortly afterwards, and long-haul flights have not been offered since then.
On October 1, 2007, Caribbean Airlines took over the regional airline Tobago Express completely, of which it already owned 45%. This was then completely absorbed by the parent company, so it no longer operates its own flight operations. In May 2011 Caribbean Airlines took over the airline Air Jamaica , since then the state of Jamaica has owned 16% of the shares in Caribbean Airlines.
Destinations
Caribbean Airlines mainly flies to destinations in the Caribbean . The bases in Port of Spain and Kingston connect Suriname , Georgetown in Guyana , Bridgetown in Barbados and Caracas in Venezuela with Miami , Fort Lauderdale and New York in the USA and Toronto in Canada . The domestic connection between Trinidad and Tobago, which was previously served by Tobago Express, is of great importance for the country. There is also a codeshare agreement with British Airways for flights to London .
