The Georgetown airport , English Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) is next to the Ogle airport the only international airport in the South American state of Guyana . It is located about 41 km south of the capital Georgetown in the Demerara-Mahaica region .

history

The airport was initially called Atkinson Aerodrom and was renamed Timehri International Airport in 1969 . In 1997 the airport was again named after the former President of Guyana, Cheddi Jagan .

In 2011, it was decided to expand the airport with the help of the Chinese company China Harbor Engineering. The runway is to be extended to 3,290 meters and a new terminal is to be built. The opening is planned for 2017.

Airlines and Destinations

As of April 2016, the following eight airlines are using the airport:

On long-haul are Miami , Toronto and New York City as well as seasonal Orlando (Florida) approached.

Incidents

  • Early in the morning of July 30, 2011, a Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 on flight 523 from New York to Georgetown, Guyana with 163 people on board, landed in Georgetown over the runway. The machine broke into two parts, with all passengers surviving and only a few injured.
  • On November 9, 2018, a Fly Jamaica Boeing 757 crashed into sand obstacles at the end of the runway after an emergency landing due to problems with the hydraulics. Six people were injured and the aircraft was damaged.
