Copa Airlines is Panama's national airline based in Panama City and based at Panama Airport . It is a member of the Star Alliance aviation alliance .
history
The airline was founded on June 21, 1944 and began operating on May 5, 1947. Copa is an acronym for Compañía Panameña de Aviación . It was founded with the help of Pan Am , which had a risk share of 32%. Flight operations began with a small fleet of Douglas DC-3s and Douglas C-47s . The airline offered the first international routes in the 1960s when routes to Jamaica , Colombia and Costa Rica were established.
Until the 1980s, Air Panama Internacional , which by then had a greater international profile, was a tough competition. Copa Airlines increased the competition when the first jet aircraft, a Boeing 737-100 , was bought for routes to the Dominican Republic , to Puerto Rico and the USA .
The expansion policy continued into the 1990s, and the flight destinations extended to Argentina , Chile , Cuba , Peru , Mexico and many other Latin American countries.
On May 19, 1998, Continental Airlines acquired 49 percent of Copa Airlines' shares, initiating a comprehensive marketing and operations alliance. Since then, Copa Airlines has adapted the aircraft livery and logo and took over the OnePass frequent flyer program .
Due to the change from Continental Airlines to the Star Alliance , Copa Airlines announced on May 26, 2009 that it would end its cooperation with SkyTeam as of October 2009. On November 10, 2010, it was finally announced that Copa Airlines would join the international airline alliance Star Alliance by 2012.
In 2011, Copa Airlines introduced a new logo similar to United Airlines' design and has since been using their MileagePlus frequent flyer program after Continental Airlines merged with United Airlines. Joined the Star Alliance on June 22, 2012.
On April 10, 2015, Copa Airlines announced that it would order 61 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft . The division between MAX 8 and MAX 9 is still open.

Investigators found that one of the Boeing 737's gyroscopic instruments failed, but the pilots did not react properly and consequently lost control of the aircraft.
