Aegean Airlines ( Greek Αεροπορία Αιγαίου ) is the largest airline in Greece , based in Kifisia and based at Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos Airport . It is a member of the Star Alliance aviation alliance and is listed in the FTSE / Athex Large Cap Index on the Athens Stock Exchange .

Foundation and first years

Aegean Aviation was founded in 1987 . Initially, flights were only carried out with small business jets. In 1994 the Vassilakis group bought the company and expanded it with the acquisition of Learjets .

In March 1999, today's Aegean Airlines was founded, which in May of the same year carried out the first passenger flights with two Avro RJ100s . In the same year one merged with Air Greece . In 2001 she took over Cronus Airlines . She has been a partner of Lufthansa since November 2005 . In 2007, 5,226,163 passengers were carried, of which 3,355,962 were within Greece and 1,870,201 were on international flights. According to the 2007 annual report, the most important shareholders were Theodoros Vassilakis (20.1%), Athanasios Laskaridis (11.4%), Panagiotis Laskaridis (7.6%), Cantel Participations (6.2%), Transmarine (6.9%) , Autohellas (6.9%) and Leonidas Ioannou (6.1%). Theodoros Vassilakis is the chairman of the board and Dimitris Gerogiannis is the general director.

Aegean Airlines has received several awards from the European Regional Airlines Association : with the "Gold Award 2004/5 and 2008/9", the "Silver Award 2005/6 and 2006/7" and the "Bronze Award 2000/1".

After there had been speculations in Greece about a merger between Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air , the merger of the two companies under the umbrella brand Olympic Air was decided by the two companies in February 2010.

Effective June 30, 2010 Aegean Airlines joined the airline alliance Star Alliance at. Although Olympic should already join SkyTeam , Aegean was accepted into the Star Alliance, also with a view to a later merger.

In January 2011, the merger plans were prohibited by the European Commission due to an expected monopoly position . The reasons given were the control of over 90% of the Greek flight offer and the associated price increases, as well as massively increased entry barriers for new market participants.

Another acquisition attempt in October 2012 while retaining both brands had better opportunities thanks to the increased competition from Cyprus Airways, for example, and the concentration of both companies on different markets. In October 2013, the European Commission finally approved the merger. The Commission approved the purchase this time as Olympic was badly hit by the debt crisis in Greece and would soon be pushed out of the market anyway. On October 23, 2013, Olympic Air was therefore taken over by Aegean Airlines from the Marfin Investment Group for a total of 72 million euros and will henceforth be run as a subsidiary of Aegean. How much the conditions had changed in the meantime can be seen from the fact that originally Aegean wanted to forego its brand name in favor of the Olympics, while now both brands were retained, with Aegean now assuming the much more dominant role.

From 2011 to 2012 and 2014 to 2017, Aegean was named the best regional airline in Europe by Skytrax , with Aegean Airlines becoming the second best regional airline worldwide in 2011 and the third best regional airline in 2012.

At the end of March 2018, Aegean announced that it would order a fleet of new A320NEO and A321NEO aircraft with a volume of 30 units (+ 12 options) from Airbus. Deliveries will begin in batches from 2020.

In December 2019, the first new Airbus A320neo was finally taken over (SX-NEO). This is the first aircraft in the fleet with the new livery, the new logo and the new cabin of the airline, which were presented in February 2020.

As part of the increased freight volume due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Aegean temporarily converted an Airbus A320 and A321 into freight machines and flew with them. a. medical goods from China and other Asian countries to Europe.

Aegean Airlines serves connections within Greece from its hubs and also flies to numerous cities in Europe and the Middle East . The destinations in German-speaking countries are Berlin , Dresden , Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Hamburg , Hanover , Munich , Stuttgart , Vienna , Geneva and Zurich .

Aegean signed a letter of intent in March 2018 to purchase 20 A320neo and 10 A321neo. This was confirmed on June 22, 2018. Options were also agreed for 12 additional aircraft.
