Athens Airways was a private Greek regional airline based in Athens and based at Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos Airport .
history
Athens Airways was founded in 2008 and began flight operations on January 31, 2009 with purely domestic connections. The company announced that it would serve the high-traffic cities and hoped in this way to dispute its competitors Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines customers. The first aircraft was delivered on December 16, 2008. On January 16, 2009, the company received its official flight license and carried out its first flight on January 31, 2009 to Alexandroupoli. Shortly afterwards, on February 18, the second aircraft was delivered. It was announced that investments in the new airline would amount to up to 15 million euros over the next three years.
Athens Airways planned to sponsor the Aigion Keravnos basketball team. She also sponsored the all-star game of the Greek basketball league, as the official carrier of the players, officials, journalists and organizers.
In the spring of 2010, Athens Airways lost a government-subsidized contract to operate certain flight routes as a result of several irregularities regarding the reliability of the services and the origin of the aircraft. In autumn 2010, it finally ceased operations completely.
