China Eastern took over Shanghai Airlines on October 12, 2009 . After China Eastern's decision to join the SkyTeam alliance , it was initially doubtful whether Shanghai Airlines would remain in the Star Alliance . By October 31, 2010, Shanghai Airlines left the Star Alliance.

In October 2011, the parent company China Eastern canceled an order for 24 Boeing 787-8s due to ongoing delivery delays, nine of which were for Shanghai Airlines.
