China Eastern Airlines ( Chinese 中國 東方 航空 ) is a Chinese airline based in Shanghai and based at Shanghai Pudong International Airport . It is a member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance .

It emerged as one of six new airlines from CAAC Airlines , which was dissolved in 1988 . Air China initially had a monopoly on long-haul flights. The other five companies were responsible for domestic flights and traffic in the Asian region.

The airline was founded on June 25, 1988 on the basis of the Chinese Aviation Administration. In 1997, China Eastern took over ailing China General Aviation and became the first Chinese airline to offer shares on the international market. China Cargo Airlines was founded in 1998 in a joint venture with China Ocean Shipping . In March 2001 the airline Air Great Wall was taken over, in 2002 China Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines joined China Eastern.

China Eastern Airlines is owned by the Chinese state to 61.64% and shareholders to 38.36% . From January 2005 to March 2007 the number of employees increased from 16,435 to 29,746.

In October 2009, China Eastern took over Shanghai Airlines through a share swap. In March 2010, the China Eastern Air Holding Company (parent company of China Eastern) took over 51% of the shares in the cargo airline Great Wall Airlines . As part of the reorganization of the holding participations, the cargo activities of China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines and Great Wall Airlines will in future be combined under China Cargo Airlines .

On April 16, 2010, China Eastern announced that it would join the SkyTeam airline alliance . On June 21, 2011 she officially became a member.

In October 2011, China Eastern canceled an order for 24 Boeing 787-8s due to ongoing delivery delays and ordered 45 aircraft from the Boeing 737 family to replace them .

On May 3, 2015, China Eastern was the last Asian airline to retire its remaining Airbus A340-600s and in spring 2018 the older Boeing 737-300s and Boeing 767-300ERs were no longer in service.

In addition to domestic Chinese destinations, China Eastern serves numerous Asian destinations as well as North America , Australia and Europe from its aviation hubs . In German-speaking countries is Frankfurt served.

Codeshare agreements exist with Air France , All Nippon Airways , American Airlines , Japan Airlines , Korean Air and Qantas Airways .

Incidents

From 1988 to July 2020, China Eastern Airlines suffered two total write-offs of aircraft. A total of 36 people were killed.
