China Northwest Airlines was a Chinese airline based in Xi'an in the People's Republic of China that was founded in 1988 and began operating in 1989. It emerged as one of six new airlines from CAAC Airlines , which was dissolved in 1988 . Air China initially had a monopoly on long-haul flights. The other five companies were responsible for domestic flights and traffic in the Asian region.
In 2002, China Northwest Airlines was integrated into China Eastern Airlines together with China Yunnan Airlines . At the time of takeover, China Northwest Airlines' fleet consisted of BAe 146 , Tupolev Tu-154 , Airbus A310 and Airbus A320 aircraft .
Incidents
- On July 23, 1993, when a BAe 146-300 of China Northwest Airlines (B-2716) took off from Yinchuan Airport for a flight to Beijing, the buoyancy aids were not extended. At the start, the machine shot over the runway and crashed. There were 113 people on board, 55 of whom died (see also China Northwest Airlines Flight 2119 ) .
- On June 6, 1994, a Tupolev Tu-154 of China Northwest Airlines crashed in Xi'an ten minutes after take - off. All 160 people on board died. The reason for the crash was an incorrectly executed repair the evening before (see also China Northwest Airlines flight 2303 ) .
