China Southern Airlines ( 中國 南方 航空  /  中国 南方 航空 ) is Asia's largest airline based in Guangzhou and based at Guangzhou Airport . She was a member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance and left it on January 1, 2019.

It emerged as one of six new airlines from CAAC Airlines , which was dissolved in 1988 . Air China initially had a monopoly on long-haul flights. The other five companies were responsible for domestic flights and traffic in the Asian region.

history

China Southern headquarters

China Southern Airlines was established on July 1, 1988 after the reorganization of Chinese air traffic. The Guangzhou-based airline has relied on modern western aircraft since it was founded. So come u. a. Boeing 757 , 777 and 787 in use. The airline also operates numerous Airbus aircraft, such as the A320neo, A330 and A380.

China Southern also participates in the general Chinese economic policy of advancing more and more into the high-tech areas and subcontracting fewer jobs abroad. In 2002, for example, a 50:50 joint venture was opened with the German MTU Aero Engines with the aim of overhauling the engines of the aircraft in the China Southern fleet in China. With Zhuhai , a strategically favorable location was chosen, on the one hand in a free trade zone with special state support, on the other hand it is close to Hong Kong , a central hub in Asian air traffic. In the meantime, the aircraft units of other companies are being overhauled there with the aim of achieving market leadership in China in the medium term. In autumn 2006, maintenance for the CFM56-3 / -5 / -7 and the IAE V2500 was offered. All Chinese airlines with V2500 engines are now supported by this joint venture.

As a result of a state-ordered restructuring of Chinese air traffic, China Northern Airlines and China Xinjiang Airlines were integrated into the airline in 2003.

On November 15, 2007 the company was accepted into the international aviation alliance SkyTeam . On July 4, 2008, a China Southern Airlines plane landed in Taoyuan , opening the first direct connection between mainland China and Taiwan .

With 115 million passengers in 2016, China Southern was the largest airline in China and Asia and the fourth largest in the world (IATA ranking).

On October 14, 2011, China Southern received its first Airbus A380 . This makes the airline the world's seventh and first Chinese operator of the A380. The five planes now have 506 seats in three classes , eight of them in First Class, 70 in Business Class and 428 in Economy Class.

Destinations

In addition to numerous Asian destinations, China Southern serves destinations in Europe , North America , Oceania and Africa from its aviation hubs . In the German-speaking area , Frankfurt am Main and, since summer 2019, Vienna are served.

Incidents

  • On October 2, 1990, a hijacked Boeing 737-247 of Xiamen Airlines (B-2510) collided with two other aircraft at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (old) . When the pilots wanted to make an emergency landing due to lack of fuel, there was a scuffle with the kidnapper during the landing phase, whereupon the plane landed hard and came off the runway. It collided with a parked Boeing 707 from China Southwest Airlines (B-2402) and a Boeing 757-21B from China Southern Airlines (B-2812) , the pilots of which were waiting for take-off clearance. In the runaway Boeing 737, 82 of the 102 people on board were killed, while in the Boeing 757, 46 of the 122 occupants were killed. In the Boeing 707, the only crew member on board survived (see also Xiamen Airlines flight 8301 ) .
  • On May 8, 1997, a China Southern Airlines Boeing 737-300 (B-2925) crash-landed at Shenzhen Airport on its flight from Chongqing . On the second attempt to land after a very hard landing, the machine overshot the end of the runway under thunderstorm conditions after the machine had already been damaged in the previous landing attempt. Of the 65 passengers and nine crew members on board, 33 passengers and two crew members were killed (see also China Southern Airlines flight 3456 ) .
