Airport layout

The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport ( Chinese  廣州 白雲 國際 機場  /  广州 白云 国际 机场 , Pinyin Guǎngzhōu Báiyún Guójì Jīchǎng  - "Canton White Cloud Airport") is the airport of the city of Guangzhou (Canton) in the Chinese province of Guangdong and the hub of China Southern Airlines . Since 2004 it has served as a replacement for the now dismantled Guangzhou-Baiyun Airport (old) . In 2018, around 69 million passengers were carried, making Guangzhou Airport the third largest in China (after Beijing and Hong Kong ) and ranked 19th in the world . The airport is a publicly listed company, which is included in the Shanghai Stock Exchange 180 index is listed.

Transport links

  • Bus: There are several bus routes between the airport and Guangzhou City, including an Airport Express bus and various shuttle buses. A bus ride to the city center takes around 60 minutes, sometimes even longer.
  • Metro: There is an underground connection of Guangzhou Metro to the city center of Guangzhou.
  • Taxi: The fees for a taxi ride basically depend on the duration and distance. The taxis are ready in front of the terminal building. Since most taxi drivers only speak Chinese, it makes perfect sense to be able to speak the hotel name in Chinese or to be able to show it in the form of a written card. Only the drivers of the Guangzhou Eastern Taxi Service can speak English.
  • Car: There is a new six-lane expressway that connects the airport with the city center. The path is well signposted along the entire route.
    • Parking: The parking fees in the parking lot or in the parking garage, both of which can be reached on foot from the basement of the terminal building, are based on the size of the vehicles. Larger vehicles cost up to 20 yuan an hour, and smaller vehicles up to 12 yuan. Different fees apply for each additional hour.
    • Rental Cars: Air passengers can rent a rental car in the city, but not at the airport itself. Before a vehicle can be rented, a valid driver's license, entry visa and valid passport must be presented to the rental company.

History and background

A moving walk in front of the airport

The old Guangzhou-Baiyun (old) airport of the same name, 25 kilometers further south and now dismantled , went into operation in the 1930s. In 1998 it was voted “Airport with the best service” by the CAAC. The move from the old Baiyun Airport to the new Baiyun Airport was one of the most important projects in the state's aviation master plan.

Construction and planning of the new airport began in August 2000. Construction took about 46 weeks. It is five times larger than its predecessor. Parsons Corp. was responsible for the architecture. and the URS Greiner Corp. The first phase was completed in 2002. The airport opened on August 5, 2004. On February 6, 2009, the FedEx Asia Pacific HUB opened at the airport. In 2010 the subway connection was completed. Likewise, in the same year the capacity of 45 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of freight per year was reached.

General

Guangzhou Airport is located in Huadu District , approximately 28 kilometers from Guangzhou city center. It has all international standards. The name and the airport codes CAN ( IATA ) and ZGGG ( ICAO ) were taken over from the old Baiyun International Airport, which was in the Baiyun district and is no longer in operation. The construction cost was around 19.8 billion RMB . The site extends over an area of 1456 hectares. The local time at Guangzhou Airport is CET + 7 hours. The airport is funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation , the government and the China Development Bank . Because of the construction, 20,000 people had to leave their homes and relocate. The airport company has now achieved its goal of making it into the top 20 international airports.

The construction will take place in three phases: The first phase includes the construction of a 3,500,000 m² passenger terminal complex, two runways and the associated road connections and parking facilities. The second phase includes the construction of an additional runway and expansion of the terminal. This third runway was completed in 2014 and has been used for flight operations since February 5, 2015. Phase 3 includes the construction of another terminal and 50 more gates . Phase 3 is currently starting. The number of passenger gates will then be 130 instead of 46 (Phase 1) in the previous final expansion phase.

future

By 2015 the airport is expected to have a capacity of 80 million passengers per year. Since 2010 the airport has had a cargo capacity of 2.5 million tons. By 2015 it should then handle 2.17 million tons per year.

A maintenance complex of the Singaporean MRO company ST Aerospace , which can carry out any work on machines from the manufacturers Airbus , Boeing and McDonnell Douglas , is to be built by 2013 . ST Aerospace (Guangzhou) Aviation Services Company Limited is a joint venture between Guangdong Airport Management Corporation (51%) and ST Aerospace (49%). The company had previously obtained permits from the CAAC aviation authority and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce . At the start of operations, around 99 million US dollars would be available, announced ST Aerospace. ST Aerospace is a subsidiary of ST Engineering and, by its own account, is the largest MRO provider in the world with over 8,000 employees.

Freight department

The freight division of the airport administration is divided into six sub-departments: the marketing & sales department, the export department, the import department, the storage & transport department, the planning & finance department and the management department. The division operates the 8,000 square meter monitored freight terminal.

The US airmail -line FedEx operates the airport Guangzhou its Asia Pacific hub in the eastern part of the airport. It opened on February 6, 2009 and is the largest FedEx HUB outside the United States. The construction was finally announced in 2005. It replaces the former Asia HUB at Manila Airport in the Philippines , as the Chinese market is larger than the entire Southeast Asian market, according to the company. The former HUB opened in 1996 and closed with the opening of the new HUB in Guangzhou. FedEx has invested a total of over 150 million US dollars in the construction of the turnstile. The aim is to create a quick connection for customers “to the world's largest trading centers” and “to strengthen commitment and leadership in the Chinese market”. In addition, it should also help the nearby high-tech companies to expand on the global market. Most of the construction was carried out by the Ghafari company.

The turnstile has a total size of 63 hectares . It can handle up to 35,000 shipments in one hour and employs around 800 people. When it opened there were 136 flights per week from there. The apron offers space for 26 MD-11F or A310 aircraft (can be expanded by 13 to 39 spaces) and for four feeder aircraft (can be expanded by seven to eleven). The HUB also has sorting systems, a warehouse area, customs building, its own control tower - a novelty for an air freight company in China - its own security service, 16 high-speed parcel sorting belts and seven conveyor belts. In the future, changing rooms, showers and a canteen will also be made available to employees . The HUB also offers delivery services to 20 major Asian cities on the next working day . This provides a connection to FedEx's global route network to over 220 countries. An MD-11F was the first machine to land at the new HUB on February 6, 2009 at 11:09 am coming from Paris .

Incidents

So far there have been no incidents at the new airport. Only one FedEx cargo plane coming from Guangzhou with the registration number N526FE crashed on November 23, 2009 at Tokyo Narita Airport . As documented by surveillance videos, the aircraft initially hit the runway violently twice on landing, rolled over and caught fire. Both pilots lost their lives in the process. The accident appears to have similarities with similar MD-11 accidents in the past.
