List of the largest airports by passenger volume
The largest airports by passenger volume are the airports that transport the most passengers within a year . A passenger is a person who lands, departs or transfers at an airport. Transfer passengers are passengers who land at an airport and take off again within a day; these are counted twice.
In 2018, as for years, the world's largest airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with 107 million passengers, the largest European airport in 7th place is London Heathrow Airport with around 80 million and the largest German airport in 14th place is Frankfurt am Main Airport with around 70 million. US airports dominated the ranking until the beginning of the 21st century, and since then Asian airports in particular have seen great growth.
The ranking data is based on publications by Airports Council International , the international association of commercial airports.

Passenger volume 2010
In 2010 global air traffic recovered noticeably after the negative effects of the financial crisis from 2007 onwards . Asian airports again recorded the highest growth rates: Shanghai Pudong International Airport increased its passenger volume by 27.2%, Jakarta / Soekarno-Hatta by 19.4% and Beijing Capital International Airport rose to second place with growth of 13.1% of the world's largest airports. The eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull in March and April 2010 mainly hindered European air traffic, but most European airports were able to develop positively. An exception was London Heathrow Airport , which ended with a small decrease in passenger numbers. McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas also developed negatively , as many tourists stayed away from the gambling town due to the financial crisis.

Passenger volume in 2008
The year 2008 was marked by the financial crisis that started in 2007 , which reached its peak for the time being with the insolvency of the US investment bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008 and led to price drops on stock exchanges around the world. Fear of inflation and recession also had a negative impact on air traffic, with the number of large airports falling as a result. Two US airports were particularly hard hit by the crisis: Chicago O'Hare International Airport and McCarran International Airport , which had 9.0% and 8.0% fewer passengers, respectively. Dubai International Airport , on the other hand, saw strong growth of 9.0% and with the Aeroporto di Roma-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci , another European airport rose to the top 30 largest airports.
