Terminals

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 has an area of 60,000 m² and was opened on January 1, 1980. From the end of 1999 to September 20, 2004 it was closed for renovations. During this time, all flights were diverted to the newly opened Terminal 2. Terminal 1 was closed again from May 20, 2008 to June 27, 2008 due to renovation work on the lighting. Mainly domestic flights take place from Terminal 1.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 opened on November 1, 1999. Due to its high capacity, it was able to accommodate all flights during the renovation work on Terminal 1. Until Terminal 3 opened, all international and national flights took place there. It is currently home to China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Air China, and Shanghai Airlines. Star Alliance and Skyteam members also fly from Terminal 2. The Oneworld -members have moved their entire flight to the terminal. 3

Terminal 3

The award of the 2008 Olympic Games to Beijing kicked off a huge investment program in the city and its surrounding infrastructure. In February 2008, for example, the international Terminal 3 was put into operation together with a third runway. This means that the airport's capacity has almost doubled from 35 to 60 million passengers per year. It was completed on November 23, 2007 and inaugurated on February 29, 2008. The steel and glass construction by the architect Norman Foster extends over 1.3 million square meters, making it the largest building in the world (as of 2013). The costs amount to the equivalent of 1.8 billion euros.

Initially, six Chinese and foreign airlines are using Terminal 3, on whose runways the Airbus A380 can take off and land. Other lines were added until the start of the Olympic Games on August 8th. The northern part of the terminal is intended for international flights, the southern part for national and regional flights. Both parts (between these there is a small control building) are connected with a simple monorail . According to the airport management, the construction time for the terminal, runway and most of the associated infrastructure was less than four years. The airport now has 137 taxiways , 114 passenger boarding bridges and 314 aircraft parking spaces. The luggage conveyor belts extend over a total of 68 kilometers. 19,200 pieces of luggage can be transported in one hour. The terminal has over 300 check-in counters as well as 64 restaurants and 90 shops. There are over 7000 parking spaces available in the multi-storey car park.
