The Beijing subway network measures 552 kilometers, making it the second longest in the world after the Shanghai Metro . The subway runs from 5:10 am to 11:40 pm, with a frequency of three to four minutes during rush hour, otherwise eight minutes. On July 12, 2013 there were 11.0469 million passengers in the entire network of the underground. This is a passenger record for the Beijing subway. The Beijing subway transports 3.2 billion people per year.
history
Beijing's subway system was the first in the People's Republic of China and construction began in 1965. The first line from the main train station to Pingguoyuan opened on October 1, 1969. Today, the route corresponds to the western part of Line 1 and the southern part of Line 2. At first, the subway was only allowed to be used by officials, but it was not until 1977 that other residents of Beijing were allowed to use it.
On September 20, 1984, the remaining part of the ring line was opened and operations were thus divided into two lines. On December 12, 1992, line 1 was extended eastward from Fuxingmen to Xidan. Another extension from Xidan to Sihuidong took place on September 28, 1999. Since June 24th, 2000 it has been possible for trains to pass directly from Pingguoyuan to Sihuidong, before there was no direct rail connection.
Another line was opened on September 28, 2002 (western part to Huoying) and January 28, 2003 (eastern part). The Batong Line, which was built as an extension of Line 1, went into operation on December 27, 2003 as a separate line. Line 5 was opened on October 7, 2007.
The opening of the underground lines 10 and Airport Express, which are important for the Olympic Games, took place on July 19, 2008. The "Olympic feeder" between the stations "Beitucheng" and "Senlin Gongyuan Nanmen", which is officially known as Line 8, was only allowed until the end of the Olympic Games with accreditation for the Olympic Games or with an entrance ticket for the corresponding day to be used.
The subway has been part of the Community of Metros benchmarking system since 2008 . The West Railway Station was also connected to the Beijing subway network on December 30, 2012.

Line 1 is an important east-west connection, with connections to lines 2, 4, 5, 10 and the Batong line.
The line 2 extends as a ring around the center of Beijing, for the most part below the present second ring road, the former walls. Line 2 is the most important transit line in the center, as it connects the center and the main train station with the outer districts of Beijing and the airport. a. via the intercity bus stations at Dongzhimen and Xizhimen, as well as connections to lines 1, 4, 5, 13 and the airport line.
The line 4 extends from the north-western North Station Anheqiao over the center of the southern station Gongyixiqiao. It connects the center with the Haidian University District and the Old and New Summer Palaces. At the same time, it connects the new south station, and thus the terminal station of the Beijing – Tianjin high-speed line, with the subway system.
The line 5 extends from the north to the south station Taipingzhuangbei station Songjiazhuang. It connects to lines 1, 2, 10 and 13. Line 5 is 16.9 kilometers underground.
The line 6 is also an east-west connection. It starts in Haidian Wuluju and ends at Caofang. It opened on December 30, 2012. Its length is currently 30.4 km and it has 20 stations. The second section of the line to Lucheng Station went into operation on December 28, 2014. It offers connections to lines 2, 4, 5, 9, 10. Trains with 8 cars run on the line, so that more passengers than usual can be carried in one train.

The first construction phase of line 14 went into operation on May 5, 2013. The completed section will connect the site of the 9th China (Beijing) Flower Expo to the subway network. This first construction phase turned out to be shorter than originally planned; further construction phases will be completed by 2015. The opening for both lines was on July 19, 2008.
Another construction phase will expand line 6 by a further 12.4 km and 7 stations. With the completion of the third construction phase, which is planned for the end of 2015, the line will be 52 km long and have 32 stations.

Tickets
A ride on the underground costs 3 Renminbi (as of December 28, 2014), for a distance of 6 km and a price scale for longer distances. The airport route costs 25 Renminbi each way. There are single tickets and cards that can be topped up electronically; these give the user a 50% discount or 75% discount for students when using the city buses. Tickets can almost always be purchased from machines and at all stations at the counter. The single tickets can only be used at the station where they were purchased. A purchase in advance is not possible. Season tickets contain a top-up amount of money that is debited when entering the underground station. The tickets are held against a wireless reader at the entrance to the subway to open the barrier to the subway. There are also barriers at the exit and the ticket can be opened again. The single tickets will be withdrawn there. The season ticket is also valid for the bus and can be used to pay in taxis. The operation of the subway was subsidized with 20 billion renminbi in 2013.
