Beijing South Station ( Chinese  北京南站 , Pinyin Běijīng Nán Zhàn , short: 北京 南 , Běijīng Nán ) is a long-distance train station in the south of the Chinese capital Beijing . Opened in the run-up to the Olympic Games on August 1, 2008, the southern station serves to integrate the greater Beijing area into high-speed traffic to the south.

The station, designed by the British architect Terry Farrell in collaboration with the Tianjin Design Institute , replaced the former Yongdingmen South Station , which was in operation between 1897 and 2006 for the Chinese State Railway Tientsin – Pukow , after less than three years of construction . The construction cost was 6.3 billion yuan .

The hall with an elliptical roof, which is 500 m wide and 380 m long, is characteristic of Beijing South Railway Station. It houses the waiting room , which extends across the tracks and via which the individual platforms can be reached. The station occupies an area of ​​420,000 m², making it the third largest station in the People's Republic of China in terms of area. The station building accounts for 310,000 m².

Traffic importance

The station is located on the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway , the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway and the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway . During construction, 100 million passengers per year at the time of the full opening, 190 million passengers per year from 2020 and in the long term up to 250 million passengers per year or 30,000 per hour were forecast. This would make Beijing South Station the busiest station in Asia.

The station is integrated into the Beijing subway network via the U4 and U14 lines . In addition to regional traffic, individual long-distance trains are also connected to the central station .
