The Beijing – Shanghai railway , also Jinghu Railway ( Chinese  chines 铁路 , Pinyin Jīnghù Tiělù ), is a 1462 km long railway line opened continuously in 1968 between the Chinese capital Beijing and the east Chinese port city of Shanghai .

history

The line consists of three sections, which are among the oldest railway lines in China, which were built before 1910 during the Qing Dynasty . The first section runs from Beijing to Tianjin and was built as part of the Imperial Chinese Northern Railways between 1897 and 1900. The middle section was the former Tientsin – Pukow Chinese State Railway , which was completed in 1912. The third section between Nanjing and Shanghai was built between 1905 and 1908. Until 1968 there was a trajectory across the Yangtze between Pukou and Xiaguan . Only with the construction of the Nanjing-Yangtze Bridge was this ferry service replaced and the three sections merged to form the continuous Beijing-Shanghai rail link.
