The Changchun subway ( Chinese  长春 地铁 , Pinyin Chángchūn Dìtiě ) or Changchun Rail Transit ( Chinese  长春 轨道 交通 , Pinyin Chángchūn guǐdào jiāotōng ) is the subway system of the Chinese metropolis of Changchun and has been in existence since 2002. It covers the summer of 2019 five lines with a total length of 100 kilometers and 93 stations. An expansion to 10 lines with a total length of 460 kilometers is planned.

Lines

  • Line 1 runs from north to south through the urban area. The southern section was opened in June 2017, the northern section in January 2019. It has a length of 18.1 kilometers and 15 stations. An extension to the south was approved in 2015.
  • Line 2 runs from west to east through the urban area. The start of construction and the investment of 12.8 billion yuan were approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform in September 2012, and since August 30, 2018 it has been in operation over a length of 20.5 kilometers with 18 stations. Extensions at both ends of the line were approved in 2015.
  • The first expansion stage of line 3 was opened in October 2002. At that time it had a length of 14.7 kilometers and 17 stations. It is a tram line on its own track, which ran in a semicircle around the city center. With the exception of a tunnel section with a length of one kilometer, it ran above ground. An extension of this line was opened in 2006, adding 17 kilometers and 16 stations. The extension is completely elevated.
  • Line 4 was opened in June 2011 and expanded in May 2012. It runs south through the city from Changchun Station and is operated by trams. The northern section runs in the tunnel, apart from that the line is elevated. It has a length of 18.7 kilometers and 15 stations (as of summer 2019).
  • Line 8 opened on October 30, 2018. This is an elevated tram line with 12 stations and a length of 13.3 kilometers. It is an extension of Line 1 in the direction of the northern outskirts.

Expansion plans

On November 30, 2018, the State Commission for Development and Reform approved expansion plans for the Changchun subway until 2025, according to which the route network is to grow to ten lines and 460 kilometers in total. Of the ten lines, eight should run in the inner city area, two should connect the outskirts to the city area. In detail, the plans provide for the following measures:

  • Line 2 is to be extended by 9.1 kilometers and five stations to the east. 5.1 billion yuan is budgeted for this and a construction period of six years is planned. It should be operated with 6-part vehicles of type B and a maximum speed of 80 km / h.
  • Line 3 is to be extended by 3 kilometers and two stations to the south. A budget of 839 million yuan has been budgeted for this and a construction period of four years is planned. It is to be operated with 3-part vehicles of type C in double traction and a maximum speed of 70 km / h.
  • Line 4 is to be extended by 4 kilometers and six stations to the south. For this, 2.01 billion yuan is budgeted and four years of construction are planned. It is to be operated with 3-part vehicles of type C in double traction and a maximum speed of 70 km / h. In the long term, it should be expanded to triple traction.
  • Expansion stage 1 of line 5 is 19.5 kilometers long and has 18 stations. A budget of 15.4 billion yuan is budgeted for this and a construction period of six years is planned. It is to be operated with 6-part vehicles of type B and a maximum speed of 80 km / h and cuts through the city from southwest to northeast.
  • Line 6, 29.7 kilometers in length and 22 stations, is being built, with a budget of 19.5 billion yuan and a construction period of five years. It is to be operated with 6-part vehicles of type B and a maximum speed of 80 km / h and runs tangentially through the city from the east to the southwest.
  • Line 7 with a length of 22.5 kilometers and 19 stations is being built; 15.6 billion yuan is budgeted for this and a construction period of five years is planned. It is to be operated with 6-part vehicles of type B and a maximum speed of 80 km / h and runs through the city from west to northeast.
  • The airport line with a length of 28.2 kilometers and eight stations is being built. A budget of 12.6 billion yuan is budgeted for it and a construction period of six years is planned. It should be operated with 4-part vehicles of type B and a maximum speed of 120 km / h. The long-term plan is to expand to 6-part vehicles. It connects the north-east of the urban area with the airport further north-east and practically represents an extension of line 2.
