The Xi'an subway or Xi'an metro ( Chinese西安 地铁Pinyin Xī'ān dìtiě ) is the subway network of Xi'an , the capital of the Chinese province of Shaanxi . The first line was opened on September 16, 2011, and the network has been continuously expanded since then. It is planned to expand the route network in the long term to a total length of 986 kilometers, so that the subway will cover 60 percent of Xi'an's local public transport.

Lines in operation

line 1

Line 1 runs through the city from west to east. It was opened in its first stage from the Houweizhai station ( Chinese  chines 寨 站 ) through the city center to the Textilstadt station ( Chinese  纺织 城 站 , Pinyin Fangzhicheng zhan ) on September 15, 2013. The total length at that time was 25.4 km, there were 19 stations. On September 26, 2019, the line was extended by 6.1 kilometers and four stations to the west to the Fenghe Forest Park ( Chinese  沣河 森林 公园 , Pinyin Fenghe Senlin Gongyuan ) station. On June 12, 2019, the third expansion stage of Line 1 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform . It will continue west from Fenghe Forest Park. An investment of 7 billion yuan has been approved for the additional 10.5 kilometers with seven stations and a construction period of five years is estimated.

Line 2

Line 2 runs from north to south through the city and connects the north station with the city center and the southern outskirts. Its first construction phase opened on September 16, 2011 and ran between the North Railway Station ( Chinese  北 客 站 , Pinyin Beikezhan ) over 19.9 kilometers to the conference center ( Chinese  会展 中心 站 , Pinyin Huizhan Zhongxin ). On June 16, 2014, the route was extended by six kilometers and four stations in a southerly direction and led to Weiqu Süd ( Chinese  韦曲 南 站 ). On June 12, 2019, the second expansion stage of Line 2 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform. It will lead two stations further north from the north station and two stations further south from Weiqu south. An investment of 4.3 billion yuan has been approved for the additional 7 kilometers and four stations and a construction period of four years has been estimated.

Line 3

Line 3 runs on a loop from the west through the city center to northeast Xi'an. The 39.1 kilometer route between the stations Yuhuazhai ( Chinese  鱼 化 寨 站 ) and the duty-free zone ( Chinese  会展 中心 站 , Pinyin Baoshuiqu ) with 26 stations (19 of them underground) was opened on November 8, 2016.

Line 4

Line 4 runs through the city from north to south. It crosses in its northern part with line 1, apart from that it was largely run parallel to this line. It has a length of 35.2 kilometers and 29 stations. In the north it ends at the north portal of the North Station ( Chinese  北 客 站 (北 广场) , Pinyin Beikezhan Beiguangchang ) and in the south in the New Space City ( Chinese  航天 新城) , Pinyin Hangtian Xincheng ).

Expansion plans until 2022

Line 5

Line 5 will cross Xi'an from west to east. It runs largely parallel to Line 1. The first construction phase between Heping Cun ( Chinese  和平 村 站 ) and the Textilstadt train station ( Chinese  纺织 城 火车站) , Pinyin Fangzhicheng Huochezhan ) will be 25.4 kilometers and 21 stations thereof 20 underground. The construction of the second construction phase of Line 5 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on February 3, 2016. The line from Heping Cun is to be extended by 20.1 kilometers and 13 stations. An investment of 9.5 billion yuan was approved for this construction phase and a construction period from 2016 to 2020 is estimated.

Line 6

Line 6 will cross Xi'an on a loop from southwest to east. Its first construction phase connects the Laodong Nanlu and Textile City ( Chinese  纺织 城) , Pinyin Fangzhicheng ) stations with each other and is to have 17 stations. The construction of the second construction phase of line 6 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on February 3, 2016. The line from Laodong Nanlu is to be extended by 19.8 kilometers and 16 stations. An investment of 14.4 billion yuan has been approved for this construction phase and a construction period from 2016 to 2021 is estimated.

Line 8

The construction of line 8 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on June 12, 2019. It should lead on a 50 kilometer long ring around the city center of Xi'an. An investment of 38.3 billion yuan was approved for this 35-station ring railway and an estimated construction period of seven years.

Line 9

The construction of Line 9 or Lintong Line was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on February 3, 2016. It will run from the east of the city center to the area of ​​the Lintong district and run in a north-easterly direction. For this line with a length of 25.2 kilometers and 15 stations, an investment of 15 billion yuan was approved and a construction period from 2016 to 2021 years is estimated.

Line 10

The construction of the first construction section of line 10 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on June 12, 2019. It should begin on the northern section of the future ring line 8 and lead from there to the northern outskirts. An investment of 17.7 billion yuan was approved for the 34.6 kilometer long route with 15 stations and a construction time of six years is estimated.

Line 14

The construction of line 14 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on June 12, 2019. It is to run from the north station over 13.8 kilometers eastwards through the northern outskirts of Xi'an. An investment of 8.3 billion yuan has been approved for this line with eight stations and a construction period of three years has been estimated.

Line 15

The construction of line 15 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on June 12, 2019. It should run in a west-east direction through the southern outskirts of Xi'an and cross lines 6, 2 and 4. For this line with eleven stations and 19 kilometers in length, an investment of 12.4 billion yuan was approved and a construction time of five years is estimated.

Line 16

The construction of line 16 was approved by the State Commission for Development and Reform on June 12, 2019. It should lead in a north-south direction through the western outskirts of Xi'an, crossing lines 5 and 1. For this line with eight stations and 15.1 kilometers in length, an investment of 8.9 billion yuan has been approved and a construction time of five years is estimated.

Tickets

Fares start from ¥ 2  for journeys of 6 kilometers or less. Trips between 20 and 26 kilometers cost 6 ¥ and beyond that the fare increases by 1 ¥ for every 8 kilometers.
