The city of Taoyuan ( Chinese 桃園 市 , Pinyin Táoyuán Shì , Zhuyin ㄊ ㄠ ˊ ㄩ ㄢ ˊ ㄕ ˋ , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Thô-hn̂g-Chhī ) is a city under the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It is located in the northwest of the island of Taiwan and had the status of a county until December 25, 2014.
The name Taoyuan means "peach garden". In the past, the area was mainly characterized by numerous peach trees . Today Taoyuan City is one of the most densely populated areas in Taiwan and an important industrial center.

Taoyuan City is bounded by New Taipei City in the northeast, Yilan County in the southeast, Hsinchu County in the southwest, and Formosa Road in the northwest. The central district consists of a flat and hilly landscape adjoining the Taipei Basin to the southwest . In its comparatively sparsely populated southeast, the city extends into the Xueshan mountain range, which is part of Taiwan's central mountain range .

All major road and rail links between Taipei's western Taiwan cross the city of Taoyuan. There is a Taiwan High Speed Rail station in Zhongli District . A linking the region to the Taoyuan County to the metro network Taipei is about which opened in March 2017 Airport range of Taoyuan Metro .
