The Hsinchu County ( Chinese 新竹縣 , Pinyin Xinzhu Xiàn , W.-G. Hsinchu Hsien ) is a district of the Republic of China on Taiwan . It is located in the northwest of the island of Taiwan. To the west of the district is the city of Hsinchu , which, as an independent city, does not belong to the district. Its capital is the city of Zhubei , which borders on Hsinchu to the northeast .
location
Hsinchu County is located between Taoyuan City in the northeast and Miaoli County in the southwest. It is bordered by Hsinchu City to the west, Formosa Road to the northwest, and Yilan County and Taichung City to the southeast .
The landscape of the district is mostly hilly and in its south-eastern part it is high mountain. There it extends into the Xueshan mountain range, which is part of the central mountains of Taiwan, and is part of the Shei Pa National Park along its southern border .
All major traffic routes between Greater Taipei and the metropolises of western Taiwan cross Hsinchu County, including highways 1 and 3 and the main Taiwanese railroad. Taiwan High Speed Rail's Hsinchu Station is located in Zhubei County.
history
After the island of Taiwan became part of the Chinese Empire of the Qing Dynasty around 1683 , the area of today's Hsinchu County was named Zhúqiàn . From this time onwards, Han Chinese began to immigrate continuously from mainland China. Administratively, the region became part of Zhuluo County ( 諸 羅 縣 ), which encompassed the entire northwestern coast of Taiwan. In 1723, at the beginning of Yongzheng's reign , the administration was reorganized and Zhuqian was administratively assigned to Damshui District ( 淡水 廳 ). This district was divided into Damshui and Hsinchu counties in 1875. After the Sino-Japanese War , Taiwan became part of Japan in 1895 and there were several administrative reorganizations that ultimately led to the area becoming part of Shinchiku Prefecture . After Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China after World War II, another administrative reform took place and Hsinchu became a county in Taiwan Province . On July 1, 1982, the previous district capital Hsinchu was spun off from the district and received the status of an independent city. The new district capital then became Zhubei .
population
With a population of around 536,000, Hsinchu County was home to around 2.3 percent of the total population of the Republic of China in 2014. It is one of the smaller administrative units. About a third of the population lives in the capital, Zhubei . According to the 2010 survey, the languages spoken in the county were as follows (multiple answers possible): Mandarin 90.6%, Hakka 56.0%, Taiwanese 27.7%, Formosa languages 2.0%, others 1.0%. Hsinchu County had the highest proportion of Hakka speakers of any county or city in Taiwan.

Official symbols
Like many other administrative units in Taiwan, Hsinchu County has made some animals and plants official symbols. At the request of the provincial administration , the district chose the camellia ( 茶花 ) as the district's official flower in 1984 . One of the reasons given was tea cultivation in the district. The official bird of the district became the endemic Taiwan bearded bird ( Psilopogon nuchalis , 五色 鳥 , "five- colored bird ") and the official tree of the district became the real naga tree ( Nageia nagi , 竹柏 ).
