The district of Yilan , also district of Ilan ( Chinese 宜蘭 縣 / 宜兰 县 , Pinyin Yílán Xiàn , Tongyong Pinyin Yílán Siàn , W.-G. I 2 -lan 2 Hsien 4 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Gî-lân-kōan ) is one of 11 counties in the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It is located in the northeast of the island of Taiwan . Its capital is the city of Yilan .
geography
Geographically, the district is roughly triangular in shape. To the south it is bounded by the foothills of the Chungyang Mountains (Taiwanese Central Mountains) and the western border forms the mountain range of the Xueshan Mountains . Both mountains reach in their foothills to the sea. To the east, the circle closes with the Pacific coast. The highest point is the Nanhubeishan ( 南湖 北山 ) at 3,535 meters on the border with Taichung city .
The majority of the approximately 460,000 inhabitants live in the plain ( "Yilan" -, or "Lanyang plain" , after the Lanyang river that flows into the sea ), which is bounded by the mountains and the sea and along the Pacific coast in the northeast of the District. About 10 km off the coast is the volcanic island of Guishan Dao ("Turtle Mountain Island "), which is now uninhabited and designated as a nature reserve.
population
With around 450,000 inhabitants, the district of Yilan is home to almost 2 percent of the total population of the Republic of China in Taiwan and is therefore one of the smaller administrative units. The population density of around 213 inhabitants per km² is also well below the national average. The languages spoken in Yilan County were as follows according to the 2010 census (multiple answers possible): Taiwanese 94.9%, Mandarin 78.2%, Hakka 0.8%, Formosa languages 1.8%, others 1.0% .
cities and communes
The county seat of Yilan is the only town ( 市 , Shì ) in the county. There are also three municipalities ( 鎮 , Zhèn ) and eight rural communities ( 鄉 , Xiāng ).

traffic
The Lanyang Plain around Yilan, which is surrounded by mountains and the sea, is only connected to the rest of Taiwan by a few roads. Since the opening of the 13 km long Hsuehshan Tunnel in 2006, Autobahn 5 has connected the district with the capital Taipei, which is just under 50 km northwest . The only road connections to the south are the provincial road ( Highway ) 9 , which runs along a cliff on the Pacific Ocean to Hualien , and the provincial road 7, which connects to the southwestern city of Taichung through the mountains.
The Taiwanese railroad, which runs along the east coast, also runs through Yilan County.
The most important port city in Yilan County is Su'ao at the southern end of the Lanyang Plain.
On October 2, 2019, the road bridge over the entrance to the Nanfang'ao fishing port collapsed.
climate
Yilan's climate is humid and strongly influenced by the northwest monsoon . On average it rains more than 200 days a year and the annual precipitation averages 2,700 mm. Precipitation is increased during the typhoon season from September to December. The rivers, which typically flow from west to east, carry significant amounts of sediment to the coast. Over the millennia, the monsoon blowing from the northwest in winter has resulted in a sand and sediment wall about 23 kilometers long, 10 meters high and 200 to 700 meters wide piled up along the coast. This offers protection against strong monsoon and typhoon winds, but has in the past meant that rivers no longer flowed straight into the sea, but meandered along the sand wall until they found an outlet. Flood disasters have occurred several times in the past.

tourism
Yilan County is a popular destination, especially for residents of the nearby metropolitan area of Taipei. The most important tourist center is Jiaoxi in the north, known for its hot springs . There are other hot springs in the western mountain regions of the county, the cold mineral spring of Su'ao is also known.
Whale and dolphin watching trips are offered around the island of Guishan Dao, and there are several beaches on the Pacific coast.
There are a number of hiking trails in the mountains, especially in the touristic forest areas of Taipingshan , Qilan and Mingchi in Datong Township in the west of the county.
Symbols of the district
On November 3, 1984, the county government elected the Taiwanese rain tree ( Koelreuteria elegans ) as the county’s official tree. The tree is endemic to Taiwan and is found in forests up to 1000 m above sea level. It blooms with yellow flowers in September and October and is occasionally planted in parks. On the same day, the orchid species Cymbidium Faberi was chosen as the flower of the district. Many types of orchids are grown in ornamental plants in the district.
