Datong ( Chinese  大 同鄉 , Pinyin Dàtóng Xiāng , W.-G. Da 4 -t'ung 2 Hsiang 1 ) is a rural community in the northeastern district of Yilan in the Republic of China on Taiwan .

description

Datong is located in the southwest of Yilan County and consists predominantly of densely forested mountainous land, which is part of the eastern foothills of the Xueshan Mountains and the northwestern foothills of the Taiwan Central Mountains . The dividing line is formed by the river valley of the Lanyang River , which crosses Datong along its entire length towards the northeast. In the northeast, Datong borders the Yilan Coastal Plain . The neighboring parishes are (counterclockwise): Nan'ao to the west, Dongshan , Sanxing, and Yuanshan to the north, Wulai Ward of New Taipei to the northwest, Jianshi ( Hsinchu County ) to the southwest, and Heping ( Taichung ) to the southwest.

Due to its topography, Datong is only very sparsely populated. The inhabitants are predominantly members of the Taiwanese indigenous people of the Atayal . Settlements are mainly found along the Lanyang River Valley.

Economy and tourism

In earlier times, forestry was particularly important. At the time of the Japanese colonial rule , forest railways were built (including the Taipingshan forest railroad ), which were used to transport the felled wood to the coast. Forestry has also lost its former importance due to increased environmental awareness. Large parts of Datong are now under nature protection. Nature tourism is of increasing economic importance. Datong comprises the 12,000 hectare Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area (太平山 森林 遊樂 區). Datong is also home to Cuifeng Lake , the largest mountain lake on the island of Taiwan. The geothermal springs found in various places are also worth seeing. Geothermal energy is not only of interest for tourism, but also for the energy industry. Between 1981 and 1993, a geothermal power plant was in operation in the Qingshui geothermal area, but it ceased operations due to a lack of profitability and technical problems.

The main artery is the provincial expressway 7.
