The Taipingshan-Forest Railway ( Chinese  太平山森林鐵路  /  太平山森林铁路 , Pinyin Taipingshan Senlin Tielu , English Taiping Mountain Forest Railway or colloquially Bong Bong Train ) was a 36.2 km long narrow gauge - forest railway with a track width mm 762 (2 Foot 6 inches ) in Yilan County in Taiwan , of which today, if at all, only the Maosing line is used as a museum railway . However, it is temporarily out of order.

history

The Taipingshan Forest Railway began operating in 1920 and was linked to the Luodong Forest Railway in 1924 . Since scheduled passenger transport has not been offered since 1979, many people do not know that there was a railroad on Taipingshan. Since commercial forestry was stopped on Taipingshan, it has been transformed into an area for tourism. There was a tourist train on a short section of the route. In 2012 it was taken out of service due to damage from a typhoon.

On September 19, 2018, the operation officially resumed on a 3 km stretch of route. Eight journeys a day are possible between the Tài Píng Shān-sho and Shigeru stations every 30 minutes. Each one-way trip takes 20 minutes.

Maosing forest nature trail

Forest nature trail

The 1.5 km long Maosing educational forest trail ( 茂興 懷舊 步道  /  茂兴 怀旧 步道 , Màoxīng Huáijiù Bùdào , English Maosing Reminiscent Trail ) begins at the platform of Maosing train station. It runs at an altitude of 1870 meters to 1950 meters above sea level on the decommissioned tracks of the forest railway and therefore has only a moderate gradient. Along the way there are high quality tourist facilities and information boards for visitors to explain the history, natural resources and geology of this historic route.

Remains of an old wooden bridge

The forest nature trail is a successful combination of cultural heritage and safe ecotourism . Since most of the sleepers are already rotten, but the tracks are still in good condition, the authorities decided to preserve the tracks and cover the sleepers with gravel to make a safe hiking trail for to create the visitors. In addition, most of the old wooden bridges are crumbling or so rotten that they need to be thoroughly renovated. As a result, some have been repaired and used as hiking trails, others are being kept in a dilapidated state, and still others have been demolished and replaced with new suspension bridges. Thanks to its ingenious concept, the Maosing forest nature trail is not only a safe, comfortable hiking trail, but also benefits the environment and preserves the old wooden bridges.

Jiancing History Trail

The Jiancing History Trail ( 見 晴 懷古 步道  /  见 晴 怀古 步道 , Jiànqíng Huáigǔ Bùdào , English Jiancing Historic Trail , erroneously also referred to as Jancing ) was built on a section of the former Jiancing Forest Railway and has a total length of 2.35 km. After a landslide , however, only 0.9 km of it is accessible to visitors. The former Jiancing Forest Railway is approximately 5.5 km long and preserves the natural beauty and historical heritage along the railway. The railroad tracks, timber trucks and bogies on the way are reminiscent of the former timber industry.
