Su'ao ( Chinese 蘇澳 鎮 , Pinyin Sū'ào Zhèn , Tongyong Pinyin Su-ào Jhen , W.-G. Su-ao Chen , Pe̍h-ōe-jī So · -Ò ) is a port city on the Pacific in Yilan County in the northeast of the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It has the status of a township ( 鎮 , Zhèn ).
Location and climate
Su'ao is located a good 20 km south of the district town of Yilan on the southern edge of the Lanyang plain, which makes up the central part of the district of Yilan. It is the end point of Highway 5, which connects via Yilan in a north-west direction to Taipei . To the south of Su'ao, Taiwan's central mountains extend directly to the sea. Provincial road 9 (the Su'ao-Hualian Highway ) leads along the steep coast to Hualien . Su'ao is located on the Taipei-Hualian railway line along the east coast.
The city's commercial and naval port is the most important in Yilan County and one of the largest in eastern Taiwan. Adjacent to it, there is an important fishing port in the Nanfang'ao district .

The cold mineral spring ( 蘇澳 冷泉 Su'ao Cold Spring ) with a bathing establishment in the center of the village is important for tourism .
Misfortunes
The Xinma railway accident occurred on October 21, 2018 , when a high-speed express train of the Puyuma Express derailed in a curve. 18 travelers were killed. On October 1, 2019, the Nanfang'ao Bridge , a 140 m long tied arch bridge at the port of Su'ao , collapsed along its entire length. There had been a typhoon the day before. Twelve people were killed in the event.
