Wujie ( Chinese  五 結 鄉 , Pinyin Wǔjié Xiāng ) is a rural community in northeastern Yilan County in the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and climate

Wujie is located in the southeast corner of the so-called Yilan Plain , an alluvial plain that was created by deposits from the Lanyang River and other rivers, in the mouth of the Lanyang. The river essentially forms the natural northern boundary of the municipality and has two major tributaries in Wujie: the Luodongxi ( 羅 東溪 ) or Luodong in the far west and the Dongshan River ( 冬山河 ) in the east . Wujie borders the Pacific at about 8 kilometers. The coastal strip is characterized by sand dunes. Further inland there is flat, fertile land that is used intensively for agriculture. The annual mean temperature is 25 ° C, and the climate is subtropical and characterized by the monsoons. There are an average of 165 rainy days and the average relative humidity is 85%.

history

The original inhabitants of the Wujie area were Austronesians ( Pingpu ), who belonged to different tribes. From 1768, during the reign of Qianlong , the first Han Chinese settlers from Fujian Province settled. The indigenous population was gradually displaced or assimilated. In 1810, during the Jiaqing reign , the Yilan area was formally placed under the Qing government . After the annexation of Taiwan by Japan in 1895, an administrative reform took place in 1920, as part of which the village of Wujie ( 五 結 庄 ) was formed. After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, it became the rural community of Wujie ( 五 結 鄉 ), initially in Taipei County and from 1950 in the newly established Yilan County.

Residents

The population was 40,138 in May 2020. Of these, 229 were members of indigenous peoples of the plains ( 平地 原地 民 , Pingpu ) and 344 were members of indigenous peoples of the mountainous region ( 山地 原住民 ). Together they made up 1.4% of the population.

The beginnings of Wanggong Temple ( 王公廟 ) in Erjie village date back to the late 18th century. After a new temple was built, the old one was converted into a culture museum. Extensive temple celebrations are held every year on the 15th day of the eleventh lunar month. World icon World icon
