Yuanshan ( Chinese 圓 山鄉 , Pinyin Yuánshān Xiāng , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Îⁿ-soaⁿ-hiong ) is a rural community in the northern Taiwanese district of Yilan .
Location and importance
Yuanshan is located on the northern foothills of the Taiwan Central Mountains and is traditionally agricultural. The most important agricultural products include rice and tea. The distillery of the important Taiwanese whiskey manufacturer Kavalan is located in Yuanshan . More recently, the community has grown in importance as a recreational destination for day trippers from the metropolitan areas of northern Taiwan.
history
The area of today's Yuanshan was settled and made arable by Chinese immigrants since the end of the 18th century. The indigenous people of the Kavalan who originally lived here have been ousted. Yuanshan is considered to be the place of origin of traditional Taiwan opera .
Agriculture
Local agricultural products include bamboo shoots , cut flowers, various types of fruit - guavas , passion fruit , jujube , mountain pears ( 高 接 梨 , pears from the mountains that were grafted onto trees from the lowlands), pineapples and bananas . Sheep breeding is also carried out.
