International area code

Talks from and to Taiwan

Taiwan has the international area code 886 . An international dial-up connection to Taiwan has the following structure: + 886- <area code> phone number (for area codes see below). For international calls from Taiwan you usually dial 002 + country code + city code + phone number (e.g. a call to Berlin: 002-49-30 phone number).

history

Before 1971, 866 was the international phone code for the Republic of China, which was then still a member of the United Nations . In 1971, with resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly, the People's Republic of China was admitted to the United Nations and, in return, the Republic of China was forced out of it. The People's Republic of China thereby also became a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - the UN authority that assigns the international country codes. The People's Republic asserted its influence there and achieved that the country code 866 was assigned to a region in the People's Republic of China by the ITU. As a result, Taiwan had no international country code for a few years and international telephone calls had to be switched via direct connections between telephone providers.

Taiwanese diplomats became active with the ITU and managed (with the consent of the People's Republic of China) that Taiwan was assigned the international country code 886. The similarity to the country code 86 of the People's Republic of China was certainly also due to the influence of the People's Republic. No other two Asian countries have such similar country codes. The country code was assigned as a so-called "reserved number". However, this did not correspond to the wishes of the PR-Chinese diplomacy, which wanted to see their claim that Taiwan was part of the People's Republic confirmed. At the instigation of the People's Republic of China, the ITU no longer listed Taiwan under the heading "Reserved Numbers" from October 2006, but under the country codes under the name "Taiwan, China". Taiwan received the area code 886 at the explicit request of the People's Republic of China.

Regional area codes

Within Taiwan, a distinction can be made between local calls and long distance calls. Taiwan is divided into 13 number ranges . Long distance calls are calls between different number ranges and require an area code that starts with a zero followed by an area code consisting of one, two, or three digits. The following table shows the long distance area codes.
