The district of Pingtung ( Chinese 屏東 縣 , Pinyin Píngdōng Xiàn , Tongyong Pinyin Píngdong Siàn , Zhuyin ㄆ ㄧ ˊ ˊ ㄉ ㄨ ㄥ ㄒ ㄧ ㄢ ˋ ) is the southernmost district of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Taiwan . Its capital is the city of Pingtung .
Location and climate
Pingtung County is bordered by Kaohsiung City to the northwest , Taitung County to the northeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southeast, and the South China Sea to the west . The Pingtung Plain , located in the northwest of the county east of Kaohsiung, around the capital Pingtung, is the most densely populated part and the industrial center of the county. The south and east are occupied by the southern foothills of the central mountains of Taiwan , which reach heights of over 3000 m on the northeastern border of the district. The 6.8 km² coral island of Xiaoliuqiu ( 小琉球 ) , located about 15 km off the west coast, belongs to the district of Pingtung .
The climate in the plains is a subtropical monsoon climate. The annual average temperature is around 25 ° C without major seasonal fluctuations. The hottest month is July and the coldest is January, with an average temperature of 19.5 ° C. Due to the exposed location with the Strait of Luzon in the south, the Formosa Strait in the west and the Pacific in the east, the district is often affected by tropical storms.
population
With a population of about 830,000, Pingtung County is home to approximately 3.5% of the population of the Republic of China in Taiwan. The population density of around 300 inhabitants per km² is less than half the national average. The population is predominantly concentrated in the Pingtung Plain, while the mountainous region in the east is sparsely populated. About 60-70% of the population are descendants of immigrants who have immigrated from southern China's Fujian Province and surrounding areas over the past centuries and speak Min Nan Chinese languages. Another 20-30% are Hakka , whose ancestors also came from mainland China.
Eight rural communities in the mountains enjoy a special status as " communities of the indigenous people ". From north to south these are: Sandimen , Wutai , Majia , Taiwu , Laiyi , Chunri , Shizi and Mudan . Mainly members of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan live here . According to a survey by the district government from 2014, 58,177 people (around 7% of the district's population) belonged to the indigenous peoples. Of these, the Paiwan made up the largest share with 47,290. The Rukai came in second with 5825 people. This was followed by Amis , Bunun and Atayal .
history
The name "Pingtung" is first tangible during the Japanese colonial rule over Taiwan (1895–1945). During this time, the area of the later district was part of the Takao Prefecture (1920–1945) as District Heito . The origin of the name "Pingtung" is not entirely clear. It is believed that the name was composed of two syllables from an inscription above a high school established here at the time of Qing Emperor Jiaqing . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan after World War II, Pingtung County was established within its current boundaries in 1950.
Agriculture and fishing
Due to the mild temperatures and the long hours of sunshine, up to three harvests per year are possible (two harvests of wet rice and one for other grains). The county is known as the "fruit basket of Taiwan". Of fruit varieties are Java apples (especially in Fangliao ), coconuts (in Changzhi , Linluo , Hengchun , Yanpu ), mangoes (in Fangliao, Shizi , Taiwu , Fangshan , Laiyi , Sandimen , Wanluan ), banana (in Gaoshu , Chaozhou , Wanluan, Ligang , Yanpu), pineapple (in Gaoshu, Wanluan, Neipu), papayas (in Changzhi, Gaoshu, Neipu ), lychee (in Gaoshu, Neipu, Hengchun), citrus fruits (in Gaoshu, Jiuru , Ligang, Yanpu), star fruit (in Gaoshu, Ligang), jujube (in Gaoshu) and others are grown. Onions and cucumbers are harvested from vegetables. Other agricultural products include rice, betel nuts , adzuki beans (in Xinyuan , Wandan), coffee (in Sandimen, Wanluan, Neipu, Taiwu), nest fern (a traditional vegetable; in Shizi and Fangshan) and horticultural plants .
The waters around Pingtung are rich in fish. The giant grouper and bluefin tuna caught here are best known .
cities and communes
The only city ( 市 , Shì ) and by far the largest settlement is the district town of Pingtung, which has around 200,000 inhabitants. There are also the three urban communities ( 鎮 , Zhèn ) Chaozhou , Donggang and Hengchun and 29 rural communities ( 鄉 , Xiāng ).
