history

Netherlands Map Formosa from the year 1640. Xiaoliuqiu than Gouden Leeuw Eylandt drawn
Lambay Island on a map from 1905 by the German East Asian traveler Karl Theodor Stöpel

An older name of the island is Samaji or Lamay . The island was sighted on July 26, 1622 by the Dutch captain Cornelis Reyersen as the first European. A few months later, in October 1622, several sailors from the Dutch ship Goude Leeuw ("Golden Lion") went ashore, but some of them did not return to the ship. It was later revealed that they had been eaten by the islanders who practiced cannibalism . Since then the island has been known under the name Goude Leeuws Eylandt ("Golden Lion Island"). In May 1633, the Dutch colonial administration under Governor Hans Putmans decided, due to the event of 1622, to carry out a punitive expedition to the island and to “devastate and depopulate” it. On November 18, 1633, a small force landed on the island, burned settlements and devastated the island. However, the islanders mostly hid in caves. On April 21, 1636, a second island invasion took place. The islanders were locked in a cave, where they partly died, and partly captured and then deported to the main island of Taiwan. The island was later colonized by Han Chinese from mainland China.

During the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279) and the Yuan Dynasty (1279 to 1368), the island of Taiwan in China was known under the name of Liuqiu . Since the Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644) I only referred this name to the small offshore island, which was also called Xiao Liuqiu ("Little Liuqiu") to distinguish it from the earlier meaning .

Administrative division

Administratively, the island is divided into the following 8 villages (村, Cun ): Benfu (本 福), Zhongfu (中 福), Yufu (漁 福), Dafu (大 福), Shangfu (上 福), Shanfu (杉 福) , Nanfu (南福) and Tianfu (天 福).

economy

Main industries are fishing on the one hand and tourism on the other. There is a fishing port - Dafu - and a port for tourism - Baisha. In earlier times coconut palms were grown in abundance , whereas today mainly sweet potatoes , peanuts , mango trees and, to a lesser extent, papayas , guavas and rose apples are cultivated. The cultivation area is about 140 ha . The former dry rice cultivation has been discontinued since around the 1980s.

There are regular ferry connections between Donggang and Xiaoliuqiu.

Many activities are possible on the island: swimming, diving, sailing, hiking, cycling, motorcycling, cave tourism, etc. Several Taoist temple festivals are celebrated on the island .
