Xinyuan ( Chinese  新園鄉 , Pinyin Xinyuan Xiang , Tongyong Pinyin Sinyuan Siang , PEH OE jī Sin-hng-hiong ) is a rural municipality in Pingtung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

location

Xinyuan is located on the south coast of Taiwan on Formosa Road. The Gaoping River forms the western boundary and also the border between Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City. The eastern border is for the most part formed by the small river Donggang ( 東 港 溪 , Dōnggǎng Xī ). The municipality is located in the south-west of the Pingtung Plain and historically emerged from alluvial land. The terrain is very flat and the highest point is the Liyushan ( 鯉魚 山  - " Koi hill", ). Only about 100 hectares in the area of this hill are more than 10 meters above sea level. On the right bank of the Donggang estuary there is a small fishing port ( 鹽 埔 漁港 , Yánbù yúgǎng  - "Yanpu fishing port"). World icon

history

Around the year 1650, the first group of Han Chinese immigrants came to the Xinyuan area from the area of Longxi County ( 龍溪 縣 , now part of Longhai ) in southern Fujian . More immigrants followed in the coming decades and gradually made the land arable. At the time of Japanese rule (1895-1945), an administrative reform took place in 1920, which resulted in the 'village' ( , Chinese. Zhuāng , Japanese. Shō ) Xinyuan , literally "New Garden", or ( Min ) "New Land" , formed. After Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China in 1946, it became the 'rural community' ( , Xiāng ) Xinyuan. In August 1949, following a popular request, the part of Xinyuan east of the Donggang was separated and reorganized as a separate rural community of Kanding . From 1950, Xinyuan was part of the newly formed Pingtung County.

population

At the end of 2018, 145 people (around 0.4%) belonged to the indigenous peoples .

Tourism, sightseeing

The Xinhui Temple ( 新 惠 宮 , Xīnhuì gōng ) on the border of the villages of Xindong and Xinyuan is considered to be the historical center and the central temple of the Chinese folk beliefs of Xinyuan. A natural attraction is the mud volcano on the border to the neighboring municipality of Wandan. The "volcano" consists of a hot spring mixed with escaping methane gas. During the eruptions, the gas often ignites spontaneously and burns down with a large flame. The eruption sites change and are sometimes in the Xinyuan area and sometimes in the Wandan area.
