history

According to tradition, the old place name Jiu Kuaicuo ( 九 塊 厝 , Jiǔ kuài cuò ) with the meaning “nine blocks” goes back to the settlement of nine households or families around the 18th century, but this is not historically certain. At the time of the Qing Dynasty, the place was under the jurisdiction of Fengshan County ( 鳳山縣 ). During the time of the Japanese rule (1895-1945), the "nine-block village" ( 九 塊 庄 , Jiǔ kuài zhuāng , Japanese. Kyū katamari Shō ) was established here as an administrative unit . After the Republic of China took over the island of Taiwan in 1945, the 'village' became the Jiuru District ( 九 如 區 , Jiǔrú qū ) of the city of Pingtung. Yuquan Village , which previously belonged to the neighboring community of Yanpu, was annexed to Jiuru. In October 1950 the administrative structures were changed again and Jiuru became a rural community in the newly formed Pingtung County.

population

At the end of 2018, 126 people (approx. 0.6%) belonged to the indigenous peoples .
