Under tension (English original title 7 Ate 9 ) is a card game by Maureen Hiron that was released by Out of the Box Publishing in 2009. In the following years it was published internationally by several other publishers, including in 2016 in a German-language version by Amigo . The game high voltage , based on the game and released in 2019, was named educational game of the year in the same year.

Background and game material

A deck of cards with 73 colored cards is under tension . There is a number between 1 and 10 in the corner of each card and a number with a +/- value from 1 to 3 in the middle.

Style of play

There is no starting player in the game and all players play at the same time. The cards are evenly dealt face down to all players, the last card is placed face up in the middle of the table. The players' cards remain face down and form the respective player's personal draw pile, each of whom draws four cards and takes them into hand at the beginning of the game.

In response to a start command, the players may try to discard their cards as quickly as possible onto the pile of cards in the middle. The cards must be selected to match the card currently on top and placed on it. Matching cards are cards with a value (corner number) that corresponds to the value of the previous card after adding or subtracting the central number. If the result of the addition is higher than "10", a card with the value exceeding 10 is discarded, and if the result when subtracting is less than "1", the "0" becomes the card value "10", the "- 1 "the card value" 9 "and from the" -2 "the card value" 8 ". Only one card may be placed individually at a time, with the player announcing the result aloud. However, a player may also play several matching cards one after the other on his own new tasks. The basic rule is that the fastest player to discard his card gets rid of his card, even if another player is faster at solving the task. If a player cannot discard, he may individually draw any number of cards from his draw pile.

When no more players can play on the card on display, players place their hand cards face down in front of them. Then a player draws a card from the discard pile as a new card on display and gives a start signal, whereupon all players pick up their hand cards again and continue playing.

The game ends when a player only has one card in hand and his draw pile is used up. This player puts his last card face down on the discard pile regardless of the outcome of the task and wins the game.

Combination with high voltage

The game can be combined with the game Hochspannung, also developed by Maureen Hiron and published by Amigo in 2016 . The cards are shuffled together and all cards are distributed evenly, one card is placed in the middle of the table as described. Each player takes six cards in hand and here too everyone tries to get rid of their cards as quickly as possible; However, depending on the card on display, either the rules of high voltage or those of low voltage apply : If the card in the middle is a high voltage card , the next card must have a corner number from the multiplication result, if it is a card off Under voltage must either be added or subtracted. Any card with the appropriate result may be discarded, regardless of the game from which it originates.
