Pingtung ( Chinese 屏東 市 , Pinyin Píngdōng Shì , Tongyong Pinyin Píngdong Shì , W.-G. P'ing-tung Shih , Zhuyin ㄆ ㄧ ㄥ ˊ ㄉ ㄨ ㄥ ㄕ ˋ , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Pîn-tong-chhī ) is a city of around 204,000 people in southern Taiwan . It is the capital of Pingtung County .
location
Pingtung is located on the eastern left bank of the Gaoping River , which forms the border between Kaohsiung City and Pingtung and flows into the South China Sea about 20 km south . The Pingtung Plain stretches around Pingtung and is bordered in the east by the southern foothills of the central mountain range of Taiwan.
The city is part of the catchment area of Kaohsiung, a city of over 20 km to the west . It has a train station on the southern section of the railway ring line leading around the island of Taiwan and a junction on Highway 3, which connects to the metropolises of western Taiwan and to Taipei in the north. A link between Pingtung and Kaohsiung's subway network is planned. Between 1994 and 2011 there was also a civil airport in Pingtung , which was closed due to insufficient passenger traffic.
history
Pingtung originated in the 18th century after immigrants from Fujian cultivated the surrounding plains. Around 1836 city walls and city gates were built in all four directions. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan , the city was named Heitō and was upgraded to a major city (市, Shì) in 1933. It was part of Takao Prefecture (Kaohsiung). In the Republic of China, Pingtung was an independent city from 1945 to 1951 and was only subsequently incorporated into the Pingtung County, which was founded in 1950.
Culture
The Pingtung Art Museum
The Pingtung Art Museum (Chinese 屏東 美術館Pingdong meishuguan ) was built after the Second World War and housed the city administration from 1953 to 2005. After that, the building was used by the administration of Pingtung County until it opened as an art museum on January 1, 2010, after around two years of renovation and conversion work. In addition to long-term exhibitions on local topics, the house also organizes exhibitions on loans from other museums in Germany and abroad.
The house of the music of the ethnic groups
The House of Music of the Ethnic Groups (Chinese: 屏東 族群 音樂 館 Pingdong zuqun yinyueguan ) is one of the few buildings from the Japanese colonial era that has survived to this day . Built as a barracks in 1937, it was first used by the Japanese Army and later by the Air Force of the Republic of China. Among the most prominent residents of the house was Sun Li-jen , a renowned general of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War . In 1997 the building was declared a historical monument and opened to the public in 2005 under the name House of Music of the Ethnic Groups .
Many instruments from the Taiwanese ethnic groups, especially the indigenous people , are exhibited in the house. Concerts of various musical styles are often held here.
