Linbiān Zhuāng , Japanese. Rinpen Shō ) in Takao prefecture was. After Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China in 1945, the Japanese administrative units were taken over and Linbian became a 'rural community' ( , Xiāng ) and the prefecture became Kaohsiung County . In 1950, the new district of Pingtung was formed from the southern part of the district. The northern part of Linbians was separated on March 1, 1951 as a new rural community Xizhou ( 溪州 鄉 , Xīzhōu Xiāng ). Due to the similarity of name with many other places in Taiwan, it was renamed in 1956 in Nanzhou ( , Nán  - "South").
