Majia

Majia ( Chinese  瑪家鄉 , Pinyin Mǎjiā Xiang ), in the Paiwan language : Makazayazaya ( 瑪家雑牙雑牙社 ) is a rural municipality in Pingtung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

location

Majia is located in the southwestern section of the Taiwanese Central Mountains , which stretches in a north-south direction along the longitudinal axis through the island of Taiwan, north of the Dawushan ( 大武山 ) mountain range. The topography of the municipality is characterized by deeply cut valleys and mostly densely forested mountains. The climate is tropical and characterized by the monsoons, but significantly cooler in the higher mountain regions.

history

The Paiwan name 'Makazayazaya' means something like "hillside" and characterizes the residential area of the Paiwan people, an indigenous Austronesian people of Taiwan, on the western edge of the mountains. After the island of Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China in 1945, the 'Majia' community was formed, and in 1950 it became part of the newly established Pingtung County.

population

According to official statistics, 6516 people (around 96%) belonged to the indigenous peoples at the end of 2017. Most of them were Paiwan with a small minority of Rukai .
