Gaoshu ( Chinese  高 樹 鄉 , Pinyin Gāoshù Xiāng ) is a rural community in Pingtung County in the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

description

Gaoshu is located on the northern border of Pingtung County. The municipality is essentially bounded by two rivers in the north and south: in the north by the Laonong River ( 荖 濃 溪 , Lǎonóng Xī ) and in the south by the smaller Ailiao River ( 隘寮溪 , Àiliáo Xī ), which runs a few kilometers to the west in the neighboring municipality of Ligang flows into the former. Other neighboring communities are Sandimen in the east, Yanpu in the south, and Meinong and Liugui (both districts of Kaohsiung, a city adjacent to the north ) in the north.

Gaoshu is at the northeast end of the Pingtung Plain ( 屏東 平原 ). The mountains of the Taiwanese Central Mountains join further to the east . The climate is tropical and warm with an annual mean temperature of around 28 ° C with no major seasonal variation. The annual precipitation is around 2500 mm and most of the rain falls in the months of May to September. The central mountains to the east keep strong winds and most typhoons off.

history

The original inhabitants of the area were Taiwanese indigenous peoples ( Pingpu , or Paiwan ). From the second year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1736), the settlement of the Gaoshu area by Han Chinese immigrants from the Chinese mainland provinces of Guangdong and Fujian began . They founded a settlement that was named 東 振 新 庄 , Dōngzhèn xīnzhuāng  - "east-built settlement". Because there was a large kapok tree there , the settlement was finally named 高 樹下 庄 , Gāoshù xiàzhuāng  - "village under the tall tree". The later place name 'Gaoshu' (lit. "high tree") was derived from this. At the time of the Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945), the administrative unit 高 樹 庄 , Gāoshù xiàzhuāng in the district of Heitō ( 屏東 郡 ) in Takao Prefecture was established here in 1920 . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, the administration was reorganized and Gaoshu became a rural community ( , Xiāng ) in Pingtung County, which was newly formed in 1950.

Agriculture

The economic structure is shaped by agriculture. 80% of the employees find their livelihood here. The cultivation area comprises 3023 hectares of (wet) rice fields, 4484 hectares of dry land, 895 hectares of short-term crops and 5924 hectares of long-term crops with fruit growing. Local agricultural products are rice, tobacco, pineapple, coconut, taro and ornamental flowers (especially magnolias ). Java apple , pineapple , papaya and Chinese jujube are cultivated as fruits .

traffic

Gaoshi is crossed by several national roads. The provincial road 27 runs essentially in a north-south direction. Provincial road 22 branches off from this and runs to the west. District road 181, which comes from the north-west, also ends in the area of the junction. On the eastern edge of the municipality, almost on the border with the neighboring municipality of Sandimen (and on the eastern edge of the central mountains), the county road 185 runs in a north-south direction.

population

In 2018 Gaoshu had a population of almost 24,500. Of these, around 1.1 percent were indigenous peoples.
