Fangshan

Fangshan ( Chinese  枋山鄉 , Pinyin Fangshan Xiang ) is a rural municipality in Pingtung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

location

Fangshan is located on the Taiwanese coast facing the Formosa Strait near the southern tip of the island. The municipality consists of an elongated, now very narrow coastal strip. The coastline is about 26 kilometers. The extension inland is a maximum of about 3.5 kilometers and a minimum of less than 100 meters. In the municipality of Fangshan, the small river of the same name Fangshan ( 枋山 溪 ) flows into the sea.

The neighboring communities are Shizi in the east, Fangliao and Chunri in the north, and Checheng in the south.

history

The original inhabitants of the area were Austronesian indigenous people . The immigration of Han Chinese began in the 18th century . After the island of Taiwan became part of the Republic of China in 1945 , Pingtung County was established in 1950 and Fangshan became a rural community ( , Xiāng ).

population

The indigenous peoples of Taiwan are relatively few represented in Fangshan. At the end of 2017 there were 180 people (around 3%). The large majority of the population are the descendants of Han Chinese immigrants (mostly Hoklo ).

Administrative division

Fangshan is divided into 4 villages (村, Cūn ): Jialu ( 加 祿 村 ), Fangshan ( 枋山 村 ), Fenggang ( 楓 港 村 ) and Shanyu ( 善 餘 村 ). Shanyu Village was the last to emerge and was formed in 1955 from parts of Fenggang Village.

Infrastructure

The main road connections are the provincial roads 1, 9 and 26. The former runs along the coast from the north. South of the Fangshan River, it joins Provincial Road 26, which continues to the southern tip of the island of Taiwan. Just before the junction, Provincial Road 9 branches off from Provincial Road 1 to the east. The so-called southern connecting line of the Taiwanese Railway runs through Fangshan . There are two train stations in Fangshan, Jialu ( 加 祿 ) and Neishi ( 內 獅 ). Both are located in Jialu Village. The latter is not used for public transport, but only for railway employees.

One of Taiwan's two main submarine cable landing points is in Fangshan (the other is in Toucheng in northeastern Yilan County ). There are connections to the international submarine cables SEA-ME-WE 3 , EAC-C2C and SJC2 .

Agricultural products, fishing

Agricultural products of national importance are Java apples , mangoes and onions . Fishing in the Fangshan River is also important. The main catches are gobies (Gobiidae), which have a characteristic migratory behavior upstream. The fish eggs laid on the upper reaches of the river are carried with the water current towards the sea, where they mature and later start their migration again as fish.

Sightseeing and tourism

Fangshan has a few stretches of beach, but is not a distinct tourist destination itself, but is primarily important as a transit station for visitors to the Kenting National Park located on the southern tip of Taiwan , which is the most visited national park in Taiwan with an average of over 5 million visitors annually .

Personalities

The parents of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen , who has been in office since 2016, came from Fangshan. Tsai himself, however, was born in Taipei .
