National parks in the Republic of China (Taiwan)
The establishment and maintenance of the national parks of the Republic of China in Taiwan falls within the competence of the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of China and is regulated by the "National Park Law" promulgated in 1972. There are a total of nine national parks (as of 2014), which make up 8.64% of Taiwan's land area. Six parks are located on the island of Taiwan, two, the Kinmen National Park and the South Penghu National Park , on offshore islands; The farthest away from Taiwan is the Dongsha National Park , with around 356,000 hectares the largest national park, the area of which consists of 99.95% of water. On Taiwan itself, the Yushan National Park is the largest with an area of around 105,000 hectares.
The Taiwanese national parks (Chinese: 國家 公園 guójiā gōngyuán) are to be distinguished from the "National Landscape Regions" (國家級 風景 特定 區 guójiājí fēngjǐng tèdìng qū), which are subject to the tourism authority of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and are subject to less strict environmental protection regulations.
