Jiadong

Jiadong ( Chinese  佳冬鄉 , Pinyin Jiadong Xiang , W.-G. Chia 1 -Tung 1 Hsiang 1 , PEH OE jī Chángjhìh Siang ) is a rural municipality in Pingtung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

location

Jiadong is located on the southwest coast of Taiwan, in the southern part of the Pingtung Plain , a large alluvial plain west of the Central Mountains , about 10 km as the crow flies southeast of the somewhat larger port city of Donggang . The western and northern boundaries of the municipality are formed by the Linbian River ( 林 邊 溪 , Línbiān Xī ), which flows into the sea here. The neighboring communities are Linbian in the west, Fangliao in the east and Xinpi in the north.

history

The name 'Jiadong' probably goes back to the abundant trees of the species Bischofia javanica here in earlier times . The tree, which is called 茄冬 or 加 冬 , 'Jiādōng' in Taiwan and Fujian , was particularly valued by the Austronesian natives . After the Japanese annexation of Taiwan in 1895, the phonetic form of the Chinese name was largely retained, but the spelling was changed to 佳冬 (Chinese Jiādōng , Japanese Kafuyu ). After the administrative reform in 1920, Jiadong became a village ( , Chinese Zhuāng ) in Takao Prefecture . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, Takao Prefecture became Kaohsiung County, and the 'village' became the 'Rural Community' ( , Xiāng ) Jiadong. The southern part was split off from Kaohsiung County in 1950 as Pingtung County . Since then, Jiadong has been a community in Pingtung County.

On February 28, 2004, Jiadong was the southern end of a human chain of more than one million people at the so-called 228 hand-in-hand rally .

population

Hakka make up just over 50% of the population . The Hakka live mainly in the 6 villages Fenglong, Changlong, Wanjian, Jiadong, Laijia, Liugen. The second largest group are Min Nan -speaking Hoklo . According to official statistics, 146 people (around 0.7%) belonged to the indigenous peoples at the end of 2017 .

Agriculture and fishing

Of the 3,098.42 hectares, 1,444.53 hectares (46%) are used agriculturally (this and all the following figures from approximately 2018). Added to this are 550 hectares (17%) of aquaculture area and 67.3 hectares (2%) that are used for cattle breeding. The main crops are betel nuts (approx. 590 ha, harvest May to September), Java apples (570 ha, harvest December to May), bananas (50 ha, harvest January / February, March / April and May to July), rice (30 ha , Harvest January to April and June to October), coconuts (48 ha, harvest January to May) and other fruits and vegetables (156 ha). Compared to earlier times, the area under cultivation for bananas and rice in particular has decreased significantly.

Aquaculture is predominantly saltwater aquaculture ( farmed shrimp : Penaeus monodon , Litopenaeus vannamei and groupers ). Livestock breeding mainly includes pigs, domestic fowl and, to a lesser extent, sheep and cattle.

Tourism, sightseeing

Jiadong has some sights of the Hakka culture. These include the ancestral hall of the Yang family ( 楊 氏宗祠 , Yángshì zōngcí ) in the village of Liugen , built in the traditional Hakka style in 1923, and the Xiao house ( 蕭 宅 , Xiāo zhái ) in the village of Jiadong, a residential building of one of the most part built in the 19th century wealthy Hakka merchant and merchant family who immigrated from Guangdong . Also worth seeing is the Sanshan King Temple ( 三 山 國王 廟 , Sānshān guówáng miào  - "Temple of the Three Mountain Deities ") in the village of Liugen, the current shape of which essentially dates back to 1971 and the three mountain deities of the mountains Du , Jin , and Ming in Chao ( Chaozhou ) District of Guangdong. The three deities play an important role in the Hakka folk religion.
