Kanding ( Chinese  崁 頂 鄉 , Pinyin Kǎndǐng Xiāng , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Khàm-téng-hiong ) is a rural community in Pingtung County in the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

description

Kanding is located in the southern area of the Pingtung Plain , about 4.5 to 6 km inland from the coast. The natural boundary to the west is the small river or brook Donggang ( 東 港 溪 , Dōnggǎng Xī ). The terrain consists of an alluvial plain and is very flat, with a slight gradient to the east. The neighboring communities are Donggang in the southwest, Nanzhou in the south, Zhutian in a very short section in the north, Chaozhou in the northeast and east, Wandan in the northwest and Xinuyan in the west. Kanding has a tropical monsoon climate with high temperatures averaging 24 ° C all year round. The coldest months are December and January with an average of 16 ° C and the months May to August are the warmest. The mean annual precipitation is more than 2,000 mm and there are an average of about 150 rainy days . The wind usually blows from the south or northwest.

history

The first historically documented inhabitants of the area were Austronesian indigenous ethnic groups ( Pingpu ) from the Makatao people . From the year 1691, during the reign of Kangxi , Han Chinese immigrants from mainland China came from Fujian , who first spread inland from the coast along the valleys of the Donggang and Gaoping rivers . The land, often swampy and flooded, was systematically drained by the Han settlers, and in 1773, during the reign of Qianlong , the Kanding area was officially designated as good land. However, the settlement had started much earlier. The old place name Qianding ( 嵌 頂 ) is probably derived from a small local elevation (  - "steep"). During the Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895-1945) it became Kanding ( 崁 頂 ). From 1920 this was part of the 'village of Xinyuan ' ( 新 園 庄 , Xīnyuán zhuāng ). After Taiwan's transition to the Republic of China in 1945, this administrative unit was split up on March 24, 1946 and the portion east of the Donggang was reorganized as the rural community of Kanding . From 1950 Kanding belonged to the newly founded district of Pingtung.

population

The majority of the population is formed by Hoklo . At the end of 2018, 129 people (approx. 0.9%) belonged to the indigenous peoples .

Agricultural products

Agriculture is the main line of business. Special products known nationwide are sesame oil and bitter melons . The voles, which were found in abundance in the sugar cane fields in earlier times, occasionally wandered into the saucepan. As a “three-cup rat” ( 三杯 鼠 , Sān bēishǔ ) or “three-cup vole” ( 三杯 田鼠 , Sān bēi tiánshǔ ), they are mostly only used in specialty farms in Kanding and other rural areas of Taiwan offered dish.

particularities

Kanding is not a particular tourist destination. In the village of Kanding there is an approximately 1.5 m high stone stele with an edict from Emperor Qianlong, in which the agricultural use of cemetery land is prohibited. The old house of the Luo family ( 羅 家 古厝 ) in Gangdong village, which was built in 1933 during the Japanese era, is well worth seeing .
