Chaozhou

Chaozhou , or Chaojhou ( Chinese  潮州 鎮 , Pinyin Cháozhōu Zhèn , Tongyong Pinyin Cháojhou Jhèn , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tiô-chiu-tìn ), is a municipality in the Pingtung County in Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

location

Chaozhou is located roughly in the center of the Pingtung Plain , an extensive alluvial plain that extends in the Pingtung district to the west of the mountain range of the Central Mountains . The terrain is mostly flat and without any major elevations. Part of the north-western boundary is formed by the small river Donggang ( 東 港 溪 , Dōnggǎng Xī ). The somewhat larger Linbian River ( 林 邊 溪 , Línbiān Xī ) runs about 2 to 4 kilometers southeast of Chaozhou .

The neighboring parishes are Zhutian in the northwest, Wanluan in the northeast and east, Xinpi in the south, and Kanding in the west.

history

The settlement was founded in the 18th century by immigrants from the area of what is now the big city of Chaozhou in the mainland Chinese province of Guangdong and therefore got its name. The initial name of the place was Cháozhuāng ( 潮 庄  - "flood village"). After Taiwan came to Japan in 1895, the administration was reorganized several times and in 1936 Chaozhou was given the status of a “street” ( , Japanese. Gai , Chinese. Jiē ), ie urban settlement. After Taiwan passed to the Republic of China in 1945, the Japanese administrative units were largely taken over and only renamed. The 'street' became the 'township' ( , Zhèn ) Chaozhou, initially in Kaohsiung County and from 1950 onwards in the newly established Pingtung County.

population

In terms of population, Chaozhou is the second largest town in Pingtung County after Pingtung County Town . The majority of the population consists of Min Nan speakers. In addition, Hakka form a relatively large proportion of the population with around 30%. According to the official statistics, 2267 people (around 4.2%) belonged to the indigenous peoples at the end of 2017 .

Administrative division

Chaozhou is divided into 21 districts ( , Li ):

traffic

Chaozhou is relatively well developed in terms of traffic. The major roads take a north-south course and are connected by cross streets. On the western edge of the municipality (mostly on the territory of the neighboring municipality of Kanding), the national road 3 (motorway) runs in a north-south direction. Provincial road 3 also runs in this direction through the municipality (with an arc around the settlement core). Other larger roads are county roads 187, 187b (187 ) and 189. Chaozhou station is an important stop along the Pingtung line , which Connects Kaohsiung with Fangliao in the south. There are plans to connect Chaozhou to the Taiwanese High Speed Railroad (THSR).

Agriculture, fish farming

Despite its township status, agriculture still plays an important role. Well-known products are pineapples , bananas , Java apples , mangoes , lychees and watermelons . The breeding of ornamental fish (African and South American cichlids , koi , parrot cichlids ) is also of certain importance .

Tourism, sightseeing

Chaozhou is not a distinct tourist destination and offers relatively few tourist attractions. There are a number of smaller temples, including the Chenghuang Temple ( 城隍廟 , Chénghuáng miào ) in the Sanxing district or the Chaolin Temple ( 朝 林 宮 , Cháolín Gōng ) in the Silin district. In the House of the History of the Chinese Opera ( 戲曲 故事 館 , Xìqǔ gùshì guǎn ), which is housed in the building of the former post office from the Japanese era, cultural events and exhibitions on folk culture take place in Pingtung. The Linhousilin Plains Forest Park ( 林 後 四 林平 地 森林 園區 , Línhòu sìlín píngdì sēnlín yuánqū ) is a small, 1005-hectare theme park dedicated to nature and art, opened in 2014.
