The airport Pingtung ( Chinese 屏東機場 , pinyin Pingdong Jīchǎng ) is a former regional airport in the city of Pingtung in the same district of the Republic of China (Taiwan) , which between 1994 and 2011 operation. The airfield is still used by the Taiwanese Air Force .
history
Before 1994 the airport was used exclusively for military purposes. From November 28, 1994, a civilian terminal was opened in a former museum building ( Jhonjheng Art Museum) on the northern edge of the airport site, while the southern part of the site was still reserved for military use. With the opening of a new terminal on May 17, 2005, civil passenger handling also moved to the southern part.
On July 26, 2011, the Taiwan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced that the Executive Yuan had approved a plan to close Pingtung Airport due to low passenger traffic, which it did on August 10, 2011. Most recently, Uni Air only offered flights to and from Taipei three days a week . The opening of the high-speed train route between Taipei in the north and Zuoying (左 營) in the south, which is close to Pingtung, in 2005/07 was seen as the main reason for the sharp decline in passenger numbers . This connection had drastically reduced the travel time by train. Politicians have criticized the fact that, despite these foreseeable developments, NT $ 1.5 billion (then around € 30–40 million) had been invested in the renovation of the airport by 2005 .
