The Tainan County ( Chinese  台南縣 , Pinyin Tainan Xiàn ) was an administrative unit of the Republic of China on Taiwan , which consisted of 1946 by 2010. It was located in the southwest of the island of Taiwan and its capital was Xinying . Since 2010 it belongs to the urban area of the city of Tainan .

history

Tainan County emerged from Tainan Prefecture , an administrative unit that was formed in Taiwan on October 1, 1920 at the time of Japanese colonial rule . After Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China in 1945, the administration was reorganized. From the prefecture ( , Shū ) Tainan, the new district ( , Xiàn ) Tainan emerged on January 7, 1946 . Ultimately, most of the Japanese administrative units were largely taken over and given only Chinese names. The Japanese Gai ( , Jiē  - "streets") became Zhen ( , Zhèn  - "townships"), and Shō ( , Zhuāng  - "villages") became Xiang ( , Xiāng  - "rural communities"). Tainan itself became an independent city outside of the district and on March 10, 1946, the municipality of Anshun (now the Annan district ) was enlarged. The city of Chiayi was also granted district freedom. On October 25, 1950, there was another administrative reorganization and the current districts of Chiayi and Yunlin were separated and become independent administrative units. The boundaries of Tainan County remained unchanged until December 25, 2010, when it was dissolved and incorporated into the independent city of Tainan . Tainan then received the status of a city directly under the government and the previous district communities became urban districts ( , ).

cities and communes

Between 1950 and 2010, the boundaries of the municipalities in the district remained unchanged. In October 1950 there were 7 urban parishes (鎮, Zhèn) and 24 rural parishes (鄉, Xiāng). Due to the increase in population, some communities changed their status: on August 22, 1968, the rural community of Xuejia became a township, on December 25, 1981 the previous township of Xinying received the status of a city (市, Shì), as did the previous rural community of Yongkang am May 1, 1993.

In 2010, two cities belonged to the district: the capital Xinying in the north and Yongkang , which borders Tainan in the south-west, and is by far the largest settlement with over 215,000 inhabitants (as of 2010). There were also seven urban parishes and 22 rural parishes.
