Jiangjun

Jiangjun ( Chinese  將軍區 , Tongyong Pinyin Jiangjyun Cyu , W.-G. Chiang 1 -chün 1 Ch'ü 1 , PEH OE jī Chiong-kun-khu ) is a district of the centrally-administered city of Tainan in the south west of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Jiangjun is on the coast of Formosa Road , about 15 to 20 kilometers northwest of the old city center of Tainan in the southwest of the Jianan Plain . The city district has roughly the shape of a lying rectangle with the edge lengths 9-10 × 4-5 kilometers. The northern and mostly eastern boundary is the Jiangjun river of the same name ( 將軍 溪 , Jiāngjūn Xī ). The neighboring districts are Qigu in the south, Jiali in the southeast , Xuejia in the northeast and Beimen in the north . Jiangjun has a small portion (0.6573 km²) of the land area of the Taijiang National Park in the southern section .

history

The place name Jiangjun ( 將軍  - "General, Commander-in-Chief") refers to the Qing Admiral Shi Lang ( 施琅 ), who played a decisive role in the subjugation of the Kingdom of Tungning founded by Zheng Chenggong . As a reward for his achievements, he was awarded land ownership in what is now the Jiangjun District. During the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945), the region was organized as the 'Jiangjun Village' ( 將軍 庄 , Chinese Jiangjyun Zhuāng , Japanese Shogi Shō ). After the Republic of China took over Taiwan, this resulted in the rural community of Jiangjun ( 將軍 鄉 , Jiāngjūn Xiāng ) in the newly established Tainan County . With the dissolution of the county and the annexation of the county parishes to the city of Tainan on December 25, 2010, Jiangjun became a municipality ( , ) of Tainan.

population

In 1946, Jiangjun had 25,313 residents. The number of inhabitants rose continuously thereafter and reached a maximum of 32,666 in 1966. From the beginning of the 1970s, the population decreased again and fell below the 20,000 mark for the first time in 2017. The proportion of the indigenous population is very low at 0.2%.

Administrative division

After 1945, the then Jiangjun county was initially divided into 24 villages ( , Cūn ). Later some villages were merged and the number was reduced to 18. After the incorporation into the city of Tainan, the villages became districts ( , ). On January 29, 2018 and April 30, 2018 another administrative reform took place and the number of districts was reduced to 12.

traffic

The two main roads run in a north-south direction: on the one hand, the provincial expressway 61, relatively close to the coast, and, on the other hand, further inland, the provincial road 17. There is also a network of smaller municipal roads.

Agriculture and fishing

Jiangjun's soils are alkaline, salty and not very productive. Traditionally, carrots are grown in large quantities and the district is considered the main growing area for this in Taiwan. In recent times , the greater burdock ( Arctium lappa ) is being cultivated and consumed as a vegetable ( 牛蒡 , Niúbàng ) ( 窮人 的 人參 , Qióngrén De Rénshēn  - “poor people's ginseng ”). The fishing port is of great importance. The previously important salt extraction from the sea no longer plays a role today. Local specialties include karasumi , which is made from mullet roe . Another specialty is pickled mustard .

Special features and tourist destinations

A tourist destination is the coastal recreation area Mashagou ( 馬沙 溝 濱海 遊 憩 區 , Mǎshāgōu Bīnhǎi Yóuqì Qū ) north of the port, where there is an extensive sandy beach. Fish auctions and direct sales take place in the fishing port. In the Xijia district there is a small art museum for contemporary art ( 方圓 美術館 , Fāngyuán Měishùguǎn  - "Fangyuan Art Museum").
