Danei

Danei ( Chinese  大內區 , Pinyin Danei Qū , W.-G. Ta 4 -nei 4 Ch'ü 1 , PEH OE jī TOA Lai-khu ) is a district of the centrally-administered city of Tainan in the south west of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Danei is located in the east-central urban area of Tainan in the transition zone from the Jianan Plain in the west to the hill country further east. The latter makes up about 70 percent of the area of Danei. The western boundary and part of the southern boundary of the district is formed by the Zengwen ( 曾文溪 , Céngwén Xī ) River , which flows in a winding course through Danei. The neighboring districts are Yujing in the east, Shanshang in the south, Shanhua in the west, Guantian in the north and Liujia in the northeast.

history

Before the beginning of Chinese immigration, the area was populated by members of indigenous Austronesian tribes ( Pingpu ). The immigration of Han Chinese began during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1661–1722). There are various assumptions about the origin of the place name 'Danei'. It is said to be derived from Nei Zhuang ( 內 庄 , Nèi Zhuāng  - "inner (ie inland) village"). The oldest "big" brother of the Yang family, who was one of the first immigrants in the area, is said to have lived here and the place is said to have been given the name Da-Nei Zhuang ( ,  - "big"). During the Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895-1945) in 1920 as part of an administrative reform from the Chinese Danei Zhuang the Japanese Ōuchi Shō (with the same characters 大 內 庄 ). After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1946, Danei became a rural community ( , Xiang ) in Tainan County, which was newly established in 1946 . With the dissolution and annexation of the district to the city of Tainan on December 25, 2010, the rural community became a municipality ( , ) of Tainan.

population

With about 9500 inhabitants (2019) Danei is one of the districts of Tainan with the lowest population. As everywhere in Tainan, members of the indigenous population make up only a small proportion of the population (approx. 0.3%).
