It has almost 80,000 inhabitants and was the capital of the district of Tainan until 2010 as an independent city .
location
Xinying is located in the north of the urban area of Tainan in the center of the Jianan Plain , the largest plain in Taiwan. The core city of Tainan is about 40 km south, Jiayi 25 km northeast. The area around Xinying is a traditional sugar-growing area . A section of the narrow-gauge railways laid out to transport the sugar harvest is now used for tourism.

history
Xinying (German: "new camp") was a military camp of Koxinga in the 17th century , which, as a follower of the Ming dynasty, drove the Dutch out of Taiwan. During the Japanese rule over the island , which lasted from 1895 to 1945 , the place became the administrative center in the prefecture of Tainan. After Taiwan was returned to the Republic of China in 1945, Xinying became the capital of Tainan County. In 1981 the place received the status of a large city (市, Shì). On December 25, 2010, the entire Tainan County was incorporated into Tainan City, and Xinying has had the status of a city district since then.
