Qigu or Cigu ( Chinese  七 股 區 , Pinyin Qīgǔ Qū , Tongyong Pinyin Cigǔ Cyu , W.-G. Ch'i 1 -ku 3 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Chhit-kó͘-khu ) is a district of Government-immediate city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Qigu is located on the west coast of Taiwan, north of the "old town" or "core city" of Tainan. The Zengwen River ( 曾文溪 ) essentially forms the southern border of Qigu. Qigu is bordered by Xigang and Jiali Districts to the east , and Jiangjun District to the north . With around 110 km², Qigu is the fourth largest district in Tainan, but with a population of around 22,800 (2018) it is only 24th among the 37 districts of Tainan.

Qigu forms the westernmost tip of the island of Taiwan . The coastal landscape is characteristic. The shape of the coast is subject to constant change through erosion and sedimentation. Qigu includes the approximately 1300 hectare Qigu lagoon ( 七 股 潟湖 , local name Neihaizai 內海 仔  - "Inner Sea"), which is largely separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, a spit ( Wangziliao spit 網 仔 寮 汕 ) and has only two openings to the strait . The municipal area is criss-crossed by numerous drainage channels. The local flora is characterized by mangroves ( Avicennia marina ) along the rivers and drainage channels. Cassowary trees were often planted for coastal protection . The lagoon is an important refuge for many migratory birds. These include, among others, the threatened black- fronted spoonbill , oriental curlew , little tern , brown shrike and the like. a. m.

In earlier times the lagoon was an important place for salt extraction from the sea. In May 2002 the extraction was stopped due to inefficiency.

33.0107 km² of the municipality belong to the Taijiang National Park ( 台 江 國家 公園 ).

history

According to tradition, the place name 'Cigu' or 'Qigu', which literally means “seven shares”, is derived from the name of a fish farm Ciguwen ( 七 股 塭 ), the seven fishermen from the Chinese coastal province of Fujian about 360 years ago to have founded when they settled in the area. At the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895-1945) the area acted as the administrative unit Cigu Zhuang and after the transfer of Taiwan to the Republic of China (1945) the rural community Qigu ( 七 股 鄉 , Qīgǔ Xiāng ) was formed. The rural community was initially part of the Tainan County formed in 1946 . When the county was dissolved on December 25, 2010 and incorporated into Tainan City, Qigu became a Tainan District.

economy

Due to the natural conditions, the district is strongly characterized by fishing, aquaculture and agriculture. The main agricultural products that are produced are cantaloupe melons , garlic (110 ha), shallots , corn , sesame (120 ha), tomatoes , sweet potatoes , carrots and mung beans .

In Qigu there are more than 6000 fish ponds on 4000 hectares - more than anywhere else in Taiwan. Mainly milkfish (known locally as 麻 虱 目 , Máshīmù , 國 姓 魚 , Guóxìng yú or 安平 魚 , Ānpíng yú ), big head mullet ( 鯔 魚 , Zī yú ), Japanese clams , oysters , groupers , tilapia ( 吳 郭 郭 , Wúguō yú ), eels and prawns ( Litopenaeus vannamei ). In the lagoon, shrimp ( Penaeus monodon , Metapenaeus ensis , Exopalaemon orientis ), Oreochromis niloticus , crabs ( Scylla serrata , Carclisoma carnifex ), flatheads , pony fish , copper snapper , sea bream ( Acanthopagrus schlegelii ) are caught in fishing nets .

Transport links

The larger streets in Qigu either follow a north-south or an east-west course. Provincial road 17 runs in a straight north-south direction on the eastern edge of Qigu. Parallel to this, further near the coast, runs county road 173A (173 ), which turns north of the Zengwen River at a right angle to the east. In the middle section, the district road 176 runs in an east-west direction.
