Dongshan

Dongshan ( Chinese  東山 區 , Pinyin Dōngshān Qū , W.-G. Tung 1 -shan 1 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Tong-san-khu ) is a district of the government-direct city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

Location and description

Dongshan is located in the northeast of the urban area of Tainan. The district has an elongated shape with a maximum longitudinal extent (in a west-southwest direction) of 20 kilometers and a transverse extent of a maximum of 7.5 kilometers. In the north-west and north, the small river Jishui ( 急水溪 , Jíshuǐ Xī ) and its tributary Liuchong ( 六 重 溪 , Liùchóng Xī ) essentially form the border. In terms of area, Dongshan is the third largest district in Tainan with almost 125 km². The western part of Dongshan belongs to the Jianan Plain , while the eastern part is hilly to mountainous. The foothills of the Alishan Mountains begin east of County Road 175 . In the middle section between County Road 175 in the east and National Road 3 (Autobahn) in the west, the terrain is hilly and west of National Road 3 it is flat. Dongshan borders the following municipalities in Tainan: Baihe and Houbi in the north, Xinying in a small section in the west, Liuying in the southwest, and Liujia and Nanxi in the south. To the east, Dongshan borders the rural community of Dapu in neighboring Chiayi County .

history

The indigenous people of the Dongshan area were Austronesian ethnic groups, most recently from the Siraya tribe . These were increasingly minorized, displaced, or assimilated from the 17th and 18th centuries by the influx of Han Chinese immigrants from the mainland of the Chinese coastal province of Fujian . During the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945), the administration was fundamentally reorganized in 1920 and the village of Fanshe (lit. about 'community of the natives / the uncivilized', 番社 庄 , Chinese Fānshè Zhuāng , Japanese. Bansha Shō ) educated. From this, after 1945, after Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China, the rural community of Dongshan ('eastern mountain') in the newly formed district of Tainan emerged . Dongshan benefited in its development from its location as the immediate neighboring district of the then district capital Xinying. After the county was dissolved on December 25, 2010, Dongshan became a municipality ( , ) of Tainan.

Residents

In terms of population, Dongshan is one of the smaller districts and was ranked 28th out of 37 municipalities in Tainan in 2017. Members of indigenous peoples made up around 0.3 percent of the population in 2017.

traffic

In Dongshan there are essentially three larger streets that cross the district in a north-northeast direction parallel to each other at a certain distance. The county road 165 runs furthest to the west, one to two kilometers east of it is the national road 3 (motorway) and in the east the county road 175. From this the county road 174 branches off in the south, which runs over a short section through the district. There is no direct rail connection in Dongshan, but in the neighboring districts to the west. The Taiwanese High Speed Railroad (THSR) crosses the westernmost tip of Dongshan in a short section without stopping.

Agriculture

The main line of business is agriculture. At the end of 2017, 6,105 hectares, corresponding to 48.9% of the area, were used for agriculture. The main products are rice , sweet potato , corn , sugar cane , bamboo shoots , ponkan , longan , orange , tangerine , cantaloupe , dragon fruit , banana and coffee . Dongshan is the largest coffee producer in Taiwan with around 150 hectares of cultivation area.

particularities

The settlement of Xikou ( 西 口 ) in the district of Nanshi was given the unofficial name “Little Switzerland” ( 小 瑞士 , Xiǎo Ruìshì ) - probably because of its many meadows . This is where the western exit of the Wushanling water diversion tunnel is located, which carries water from the Zengwen River underground from the neighboring district of Nanxi to the Wushantou Reservoir. Well known is the funnel strudel ( 天井 漩渦 , Tiānjǐng xuánwō , ), a large raid funnel in a storage basin that supplies the Wushantou reservoir. The coffee-growing areas (mixed with fruit-growing areas) lie along county road 175 in the east of Dongshan, and along the road there are numerous corresponding shops, so that this has been given the name 175 咖啡 大道  - "175 Coffee Boulevard". Is considered to be worth the Bixuan Temple ( 碧軒寺 , Bìxuān Sì , ) in the district of Dongshan, of the Guanyin - Buddha is consecrated and return to its beginnings to 1844, and the Fuyou Temple ( 孚佑宮 , Fuyou Gong , ) in Nanshi.
